{"id":208194,"date":"2025-12-28T17:15:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T17:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/208194\/"},"modified":"2025-12-28T17:15:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-28T17:15:07","slug":"from-that-bird-guy-to-bus-aunty-the-real-social-media-personalities-rising-above-ai-slop-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/208194\/","title":{"rendered":"From that bird guy to \u2018bus aunty\u2019: the real social media personalities rising above AI slop | Social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For years, social media fame has been associated with the red carpet glamour of the Kardashians and Cristiano Ronaldo\u2019s megawatt sporting celebrity, but millions of users globally are increasingly turning their attention to unassuming heroes drawn from everyday life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">TikTok says a range of accounts, from a bird enthusiast to an Italian grandmother and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/sep\/02\/meet-bus-aunty-the-nurse-turning-londons-doubledeckers-into-a-tiktok-sensation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a doubledecker bus fan<\/a>, have grown in popularity this year as social media users latch on to authentic voices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Cotswolds-based pensioner has become an Instagram hit thanks to his posts celebrating his garden \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DSQUN7oCi_o\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including a fondness for red cabbage<\/a>. Gerald Stratford, who has 370,000 followers, has starred in a photoshoot for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gucci.com\/qa\/en_gb\/st\/stories\/article\/gucci-off-the-grid-highsnobiety?srsltid=AfmBOorTnsmVub7CCkQ0G_161HnbWY6Z2ZJg3eqhgWmL0TZJge2Jpu3I\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gucci<\/a> off the back of his grassroots success.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald Stratford, who is a fan of red cabbage. Photograph: @stratfordgerald\/Instagram<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rowland Smith, the creative director at Billion Dollar Boy, a UK-based advertising agency that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/jan\/17\/uk-tiktokers-us-audiences\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">works with creators<\/a>, says Stratford is an example of the authenticity and passion that online audiences are seeking as their channels become overwhelmed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/aug\/11\/cat-soap-operas-and-babies-trapped-in-space-the-ai-slop-taking-over-youtube\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI-generated \u201cslop\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pointing out that the demand for everyday content appears to have increased this year, he says: \u201cWe are getting a lot of AI content on social media and I think this is an antidote to that. A lot of material like Gerald\u2019s has an educational element as well. Audiences are wanting to get more out of their feeds than just scrolling every three seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">TikTok is viewed as a good platform for lesser known creators because its algorithm prioritises relevance and resonance over celebrity, according to Smith.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAudiences are becoming quite fatigued with polished, overly stylised creator content. We are starting to see a push away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At this year\u2019s TikTok awards for UK and Ireland, the platform handed the Voice for Change gong to Tola and Kevin Andu, a mother and son, for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raisingkevin_\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@raisingkevin_<\/a> account, which documents Kevin\u2019s journey as a young autistic man. Badged \u201cautism joy\u201d, the videos detailing 20-year-old Kevin\u2019s daily experiences, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raisingkevin_\/video\/7264347560050003233\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trying new foods<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@raisingkevin_\/video\/7581976808170523926\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">having a job<\/a>, receive millions of views. Photograph: Nicky J Sims\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Tola says Kevin\u2019s online popularity has given him opportunities that have \u201ctruly changed his life\u201d, including a permanent job. \u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud because I remember the nights I lay awake worrying about him, what his future will look like and worried sick about if the world would ever understand and accept him,\u201d she said. \u201cSo now to see millions of people choosing to follow his journey and celebrate him is an answered prayer for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Elsewhere on TikTok in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@omo.oroje?lang=en\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbus aunty\u201d<\/a> Bemi Orojuogun and the ornithologist <a href=\"https:\/\/jackbaddams.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Baddams<\/a> have proved popular.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Baddams with a feathered friend. Photograph: @jabaddams\/TikTok<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen people have a niche and are passionate about it, it tends to blow up,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the US, unlikely creator hits on TikTok include the seventysomething identical twins Wayne and Dwayne Haneline, who were a singing duo before serving in the Vietnam war and have returned to entertaining several decades later. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@hanelinetwins\/video\/7175206768564391210\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unique take<\/a> on AC\/DC\u2019s Back in Black has had nearly 80m views alone. Another popular US veteran is Asena Johnson, from Hawaii, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@senazaddy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posts about post-army life and Samoan and Tongan culture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Europe, Nonna Silvi, an 84-year-old from Tuscany, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nonnasilviofficial\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">become a hit<\/a> with posts from her son\u2019s bakery. She now offers her <a href=\"https:\/\/nonnasilvi.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">own line of bakery products<\/a>. Solange Fugger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@minerva.salute\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another Italian creator<\/a>, has won plaudits for her educational videos as the youngest head of the emergency department at a major hospital in Rome.
