NEWARK, NJ \u2014 Officials have identified someone with measles who had been in Newark Liberty International Airport less than a week before Christmas Day, and are warning residents of potential exposure. <\/p>\n
According to the NJ Department of Health, a non-New Jersey resident was in Newark Airport on Dec. 19. Officials said that anyone who was in Terminal B and Terminal C between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. that day could have been exposed. <\/p>\n
Information on the patient\u2019s other whereabouts within those 12 hours was not made immediately available. <\/p>\n
As of Dec. 26, no additional cases have been reported to the DOH. <\/p>\n
Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet,\u201d a DOH statement read. \u201cMeasles can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.\u201d<\/p>\n
Individuals who think they may have contracted the virus should call their local health department or a health care provider before going to any medical office or emergency department, health officials say.<\/p>\n
This is the 11th confirmed case of measles in New Jersey in 2025. <\/p>\n
