Palestinian actor and director Mohammad Bakri, who gained international recognition for his portrayal of Abdul Qadir G\u2019ulom in the television series \u201cHomeland,\u201d died Wednesday, Dec. 24, at age 72. <\/p>\n

The Associated Press<\/a> reported that his death was attributed to heart and lung issues.<\/p>\n

Bakri\u2019s son, Saleh Bakri, announced the news on Instagram, according to CNN<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cWith profound sorrow and grief, we announce the passing of our beloved father, the actor Mohammad Bakri,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n

Born in Israel in November 1953, Bakri studied acting and Arabic literature at Tel Aviv University, graduating in the 1970s, Parade<\/a> noted. He launched his career in the 1980s with theater and film work in Israel and Palestine before transitioning to international cinema. <\/p>\n

Beyond his acting career, Bakri directed the controversial 2003 documentary \u201cJenin, Jenin,\u201d<\/a> which highlighted deadly confrontations between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in Jenin in 2002.<\/p>\n

Israeli director Sinai Peter reflected on Bakri\u2019s legacy in comments to Ynet, CNN noted, stating that Bakri \u201cremained steadfast, both in his upright stance for the rights of his people and his commitment for a shared life and peace for Israeli and Palestinians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bakri\u2019s cousin, Rafic, told a local media outlet, \u201cI am certain that Abu Saleh will remain in the memory of Palestinian people everywhere and all people of the free world.\u201d<\/p>\n

His final film, \u201cAll That\u2019s Left of You,\u201d was recently shortlisted for a potential Best International Feature nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards. <\/p>\n
