{"id":209032,"date":"2025-12-29T05:04:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T05:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/209032\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T05:04:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T05:04:09","slug":"worlds-deepest-gas-hydrate-discovered-teeming-with-life-off-greenland-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/209032\/","title":{"rendered":"World&#8217;s Deepest Gas Hydrate Discovered Teeming With Life Off Greenland : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A reserve of natural gas bubbling from a cage of ice discovered on the ocean floor to the west of Greenland may be the deepest gas hydrate cold seep on record, and it happens to be teeming with animal life.<\/p>\n<p>The Freya gas hydrate mounds were discovered during the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceancensus.org\/expeditions\/arctic-deep\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ocean Census Arctic Deep EXTREME24 expedition<\/a>, led by researchers from UiT The Arctic University of Norway and other partners. A water column gas flare alerted the researchers to unusual activity deep below their ship, prompting them to send a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>There, they encountered exposed mounds of a crystalline material known as a gas hydrate. The scientists guided the ROV to collect samples of the methane seepage and crude oil, along with sediment that contained a diversity of marine life.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/deep-sea-wonderland-found-thriving-where-humans-have-never-been\" style=\"--tw-scale-x: 1; --tw-scale-y: 1; --tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; --tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; --tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; --tw-ring-color: #3b82f680; --tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deep-Sea Wonderland Found Thriving Where Humans Have Never Been<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This discovery rewrites the playbook for Arctic deep-sea ecosystems and carbon cycling,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.uit.no\/nyheter\/artikkel?p_document_id=917158\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> the expedition&#8217;s co-chief scientist Giuliana Panieri.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found an ultra-deep system that is both geologically dynamic and biologically rich, with implications for biodiversity, climate processes, and future stewardship of the High North.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The deep-sea animals that call the Freya gas hydrate mounds home feed on <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.tim.2023.11.013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chemosynthetic microbes<\/a> that turn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mystery-lifeforms-have-been-found-living-in-the-dark-beneath-antarctica-s-ice-shelves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chemicals like methane<\/a>, sulphide, and other hydrocarbons into biological fuel.<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly what is seeping out of the seafloor at the newly discovered Freya mounds, far below the surface of the Greenland Sea: methane, and, to a lesser extent, heavier hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-24-at-12.49.49-642x434.png\" alt=\"deep sea photograph showing an underwater mound with a cave-like structure within. one star on the opening indicates 'gas hydrate sample' and another to the bottom of the opening says 'oil-impregnated sediment sample'\" width=\"642\" height=\"434\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-186854\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>One of the Freya hydrate gas mounds, with sample sites marked. (Panieri et al., Nature Communications, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>With a steady supply of these chemicals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stunning-new-video-reveals-deepest-known-undersea-life-forms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leaking from the Earth&#8217;s crust<\/a>, the inhabitants of the Freya mounds are quite unbothered by the 3,640 meters (roughly 11,940 feet) of ocean above their heads. Who needs sunlight when you&#8217;ve got gas hydrates, which are a <a href=\"https:\/\/schmidtocean.org\/cruise\/methane-seeps-at-edge-of-hydrate-stability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">frozen mixture of methane and water<\/a>, held in a crystal state by the high pressures and low temperatures of the deep ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly one-fifth of the world&#8217;s methane is in the form of gas hydrate, locked in deep marine sediments.<\/p>\n<p>Discovering the Freya mounds more than 3.5 kilometers below the surface is unusually deep for such a seep, though. Most on record are less than 2,000 meters underwater.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/deep-sea-creatures-642x638.jpg\" alt=\"six strange deep sea creatures on a black background. from top to bottom: a curly red worm in a calcerous tube; a pale, semi-translucent shrimp-like creature; a pale, semi-translucent worm-like creature with tentacles on its face; a semi-translucent jellyfish with a stalk on its head; a stick with many orange snails on it; a bivalve mollusc with grey and rusty colored shell\" width=\"642\" height=\"638\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-186776\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Animals discovered at the Freya mounds included tubeworms (b), shrimp-like crustaceans (c), bristle worms (d), and bivalves (g) (Panieri et al., Nature Communications, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>The animals include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siboglinidae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">siboglinid<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maldanidae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">maldanid<\/a> tubeworms, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skeneoides\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">skeneid<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rissoidae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rissoid snails<\/a>, and melitid amphipods. The ecosystem has a similar composition, at the family level, to Arctic hydrothermal vents at similar depths.<\/p>\n<p>Compounds found in the sediment samples suggest the oil and possibly the gases originate from flowering plants that once grew in a warm, forested Greenland back in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miocene\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Miocene<\/a>, a geological epoch stretching from 23 to 5.3 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>These carbon-rich deposits are what make the Freya mounds such a great place to live (if you&#8217;re a maldanid tubeworm or a melitid amphipod). It&#8217;s also a key reason why <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/critical-minerals-us-bid-bypass-international-rules-deep-sea-mining\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the world&#8217;s mining industry and some governments<\/a> have their eyes on the deep Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite significant progress in understanding the distribution and concentration of gas hydrates, a major challenge remains in evaluating gas hydrates as an energy resource and their role in global  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/climate-change\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73046\" data-postid=\"186725\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">climate change<\/a>,&#8221; the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41467-025-67165-x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">note<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, deep-sea mining has primarily focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientist-who-discovered-dark-oxygen-ignored-it-for-years-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polymetallic nodules<\/a>; potato-size lumps found on the seafloor that contain rare earth minerals used in devices like smartphones.
