{"id":210199,"date":"2025-12-29T20:55:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T20:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/210199\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T20:55:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T20:55:24","slug":"lebanese-students-create-designs-for-life-under-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/210199\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese students create designs for life under conflict"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Design and architecture students from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lebanon\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lebanon<\/a> have tackled some of the biggest challenges facing their country in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/exhibitions-tag\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition<\/a> Design in Conflict, held in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/beirut\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beirut<\/a>&#8216;s notorious abandoned Burj El Murr skyscraper.<\/p>\n<p>A kit to block out the sound of drones and an adaptive reuse proposal for the silos at the heart of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2020\/08\/20\/beirut-explosion-architect-designers-damage-businesses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2020 Beirut port explosion<\/a> were among the projects in the show, organised by online platform <a href=\"https:\/\/archifeed.me\/Home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Archifeed<\/a>\u00a0along with product designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/juice_bassil\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Youssef Bassil<\/a> and design engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ticigi.emme\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tark Mahmoud<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2282250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of the front of the Burj El Murr building in Beirut at ground level with people approaching an entrance set up for an event\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Design in Conflict was held at the Burj El Murr building<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wedesignbeirut.com\/exhibitions\/design-in-conflict-at-burj-el-murr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Design in Conflict<\/a> took place during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/we-design-beirut\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We Design Beirut<\/a> festival, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/05\/23\/we-design-beirut-2024-mariana-wehbe-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held\u00a0for the last two years<\/a> despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/12\/19\/lebanon-israel-war-impact-architects-designers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel&#8217;s ground invasion<\/a> and continued strikes in nearby southern Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>Within this context, Archifeed co-founders Teymour Khoury and Yasmina Mahmoud felt that the best way to channel their support for the country&#8217;s young designers and architects was to have them address the realities of war and conflict.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2282255 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of products displayed on metal scaffolding for an exhibition\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The exhibition featured student projects exploring life under conflict<\/p>\n<p>The attainment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archilovers.com\/projects\/181688\/murr-tower.html#images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Burj El Murr<\/a> as an exhibition venue was a stroke of luck enabled by We Design Beirut&#8217;s existing working relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidere.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solidere<\/a>, the development company that now owns the building and is leading the reconstruction of central Beirut.<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the Burj El Murr began in 1974, when Beirut was flourishing economically and culturally, and ended mid-build when the civil war broke out in 1975.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2282261\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of architecture exhibits within a dark and simple exhibition space on scaffolding display units\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The architecture projects looked at some of Lebanon&#8217;s most famous sites of conflict<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This ambitious project turned into a sniper&#8217;s nest,&#8221; Mahmoud told Dezeen. &#8220;Burj El Murr really signified the violence of the civil war.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the highest tower in the city, so it was really an amazing vantage point. Whoever had control of Burj El Murr basically had control of the city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2282236\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_20-852x572.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a woman using the Sonic Protection Kit with fabric-covered coverings over her ear\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1588\"  \/>The Sonic Protection Kit is designed to provide relief from constant drone noise<\/p>\n<p>For Mahmoud&#8217;s generation, too young to remember the civil war, the empty tower looming over the city became a reminder of Lebanon&#8217;s constant &#8220;state of interruption&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were so happy to host [the exhibition] in a space that really needed this sort of dialogue,&#8221; Mahmoud said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2282235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_21-852x566.jpg\" alt=\"Fold-out instructions for drone noise-blocking headphones\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1571\"  \/>The kit consists of sound-absorbing headphones integrated with a soft fabric hood<\/p>\n<p>Design in Conflict featured 58 architecture and design projects from nine universities across Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>The students developed the works within their courses in response to a brief from the Archifeed team, who then helped them hone the strongest projects during a summer bootcamp.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/04\/01\/instant-windows-reto-togni-design\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Instant-Windows_dezeen_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Instant Windows Reto Togni\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Instant Windows offers quick fix for houses in war zones\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The curators urged students to resist &#8220;comforting&#8221; narratives around post-war reconstruction and instead explore how designers can really navigate conflict, expose its mechanisms and engage with people&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n<p>Several of the architecture students focused on Lebanon&#8217;s most famous sites of the last decade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2282238\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x1176.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a tent structure fashioned from a ladder and a sheet with a person's legs sticking out from inside\" width=\"1713\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The Survive, Live, Thrive is a manual for repurposing everyday objects for survival<\/p>\n<p>Joe Maatouk&#8217;s project, Runway 17: An Index of Dysfunction, envisions a way to bring an unused runway at Beirut Airport back into service by raising the airstrip above the height of an adjoining informal settlement that obstructs its use.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he proposed a conflict-specific aviation academy and museum to be built under the sloped earth, turning the infrastructural challenges caused by instability and displacement into an opportunity for education.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2282241 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x904.jpg\" alt=\"Instructions for making war survival tools out of everyday objects\" width=\"2227\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It includes instructions for how to turn a clothes hanger into a bow<\/p>\n<p>Another architecture project, Accretions of the Port by Nour Atallah, tackles the site of the 2020 Beirut Port explosion, envisioning its reuse as a &#8220;layered museum&#8221; that evolves over time to reflect the &#8220;continuum of structural shocks&#8221; that have marked the harbour.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the design projects address problems common to contemporary conflicts all over the world. Rhea Bassil&#8217;s Sonic Protection Kit offers relief from the psychological torment of constant drone noise and was designed for mass production and distribution through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/humanitarian-design\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humanitarian aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Christy Asfar and Hanady Estephan&#8217;s Deskrest is a classroom desk and chair that transform into a bed, for when schools are turned into shelters, while Marc Khalil&#8217;s Survive, Live, Thrive is a kind of instruction manual for transforming everyday items into wartime essentials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2282260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/design-in-conflict-exhibition-beirut-design_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Bird's eye view photo of a woman walking through an exhibition as viewed through a gap in the floor above\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The Burj El Murr was abandoned mid-construction in the 1970s<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Lebanon, conflict is not a rupture in an otherwise stable terrain but a mode of existence, a lens through which the built environment, material landscapes and lived realities are continuously reconfigured,&#8221; the exhibition organisers said in their curatorial statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These works do not seek to define what comes after conflict.
