{"id":210512,"date":"2025-12-30T00:57:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T00:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/210512\/"},"modified":"2025-12-30T00:57:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-30T00:57:08","slug":"earths-core-seems-to-be-wrapped-in-layers-like-an-onion-study-finds-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/210512\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth&#8217;s Core Seems to Be Wrapped in Layers Like an Onion, Study Finds : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seismic waves passing through Earth&#8217;s inner core have revealed much about our planet&#8217;s iron center: how it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earths-inner-core-is-mysteriously-changing-shape-study-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changing shape<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earths-inner-core-may-right-now-be-in-the-process-of-changing-direction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reversing its spin<\/a>, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earths-inner-core-isnt-a-smooth-sphere-after-all-its-textured\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weirdly textured<\/a>, and contains an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-state-of-matter-discovered-flowing-inside-earths-core\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unusual state of matter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, a new study seeking to explain anomalous data suggests Earth&#8217;s core may be layered like an onion.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists in Germany wanted to specifically investigate the problem of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seismic_anisotropy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seismic anisotropies<\/a> \u2013 variations in the speed of seismic waves reverberating through Earth when they hit the inner core, depending on their direction of travel.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/earths-atmosphere-is-leaking-to-the-moon-and-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s Atmosphere Is Leaking to The Moon, And Here&#8217;s Why<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been several hypotheses for the origin of these anisotropies,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-muenster.de\/news\/view.php?cmdid=15154\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> mineralogist Carmen Sanchez-Valle, from the University of M\u00fcnster.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We set out to study the combined effect of silicon and carbon on the deformation behavior of iron.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To figure out what&#8217;s happening, the researchers tested how these key elements of the inner core might interact under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-insane-pressures-and-temperature-of-earth-s-outer-core-have-been-recreated-in-a-lab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extreme pressures<\/a> and temperatures as high as 820 \u00b0C (1508 \u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/15154-871G0G40-webL-642x321.jpg\" alt=\"Image of machines used in physics experiments to mimic Earth's inner core conditions\" width=\"642\" height=\"321\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-187059\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The experimental setup, which includes a vacuum chamber housing a high-temperature diamond anvil cell. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1109281\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carmen S\u00e1nchez-Valle<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Using X-ray diffraction, the researchers looked for a property called <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.egu.eu\/divisions\/gd\/2022\/07\/06\/into-the-anisotropic-earth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lattice-preferred orientation<\/a> (LPO), which describes how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/physicists-finally-capture-mysterious-wigner-crystal-after-90-years\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crystals within solids<\/a> align due to thermal patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, scientists lacked substantial data on how the LPO of iron might appear when mixed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/there-could-be-upward-moving-silicon-rich-snow-in-earths-outer-core\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">silicon<\/a> and carbon to form alloys.<\/p>\n<p>LPO can affect the way that sound waves are transmitted through metals like iron, and it has been thought that this may explain seismic anisotropy. Here, it was tested on the tiniest of scales, with the alloys contained, squished, and heated in super small canisters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The diffraction patterns were analyzed after the experiment to derive plastic properties \u2013 specifically, yield strength and viscosity \u2013 of the iron-silicon-carbon alloys, which were further modeled through theory to extrapolate them to inner core conditions,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-muenster.de\/news\/view.php?cmdid=15154\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Sanchez-Valle.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/CoreWaves.jpg\" alt=\"Velocity wave measurements\" width=\"642\" height=\"332\" class=\"wp-image-186793 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The projected speed changes in iron-silicon-carbon alloys under core conditions matched with field recordings.
