Sure, it&#8217;s a simple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"movement\" data-node-id=\"3.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">movement<\/a> that doesn&#8217;t stir much excitement when you see someone holding the position in a corner of the gym \u2013 but if you level up to one of the toughest variations of the exercise around, the Copenhagen plank, you won&#8217;t be so quick to snub your nose. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Underrated and underused (and maybe initially overwhelming on first attempt),  the Copenhagen plank without question is one of the most challenging plank variations out there. One major advantage of the Copenhagen plank is that there\u2019s little chance that you&#8217;ll get bored. Forget counting your reps in minutes. If you do it right, you should be giving everything you have for seconds. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But once you master it, according to Men\u2019s Health US fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S., and fitness editor Brett Williams, N.A.S.M., the Copenhagen plank will provide plenty of core-crushing benefits, especially if you&#8217;re a runner.  <\/p>\n<p>How to Do the Copenhagen Plank<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Normally when we think side plank, we prioritise bracing our entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/ab-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/ab-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"core\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">core<\/a>. The Copenhagen is a little bit different, according to Samuel. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8216;Because we&#8217;re going to work a lot of lateral stability in this plank, you&#8217;re going to start to get a lot of hip effect,&#8217; Samuel says. &#8216;Your adductors and abductors and both your inner and outer thighs are going to wind the firing in this move as well.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">You\u2019ll also notice that you\u2019re actually set up in a position that mirrors a runner&#8217;s stride, so be aware of reinforcing a good, high-knee position, and make sure you can own it in the sagittal plane. <\/p>\n<p><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"leg, sitting, bench, arm, leisure, exercise equipment, furniture, physical fitness, abdomen, sunlounger,\" title=\"Leg, Sitting, Bench, Arm, Leisure, Exercise equipment, Furniture, Physical fitness, Abdomen, Sunlounger, \" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"3009\" height=\"1338\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/side-adductor-plank-1589968942.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/>Get Set Up on the Bench <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">To start, you\u2019ll need a bench, or ideally a raised platform that doesn\u2019t have a back on it, like an ottoman. This will allow you to scale your plank\u2019s difficulty level. And trust us, you\u2019ll first need to make adjustments. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Place your top shin on the bench. You\u2019ll notice the closer you get your knee to the bench, the easier it becomes as you\u2019re working with less lever. Move it out more, and the lever becomes longer and more challenging. We suggest starting about two inches out. <\/p>\n<p>Hold a Strong Side Plank<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">From here, think of a side plank.In other  words, place your forearm perpendicular to your torso on the ground \u2013 that&#8217;s going to protect your shoulder, then shift into a safer external rotation. Think about squeezing both shoulder blades and glutes. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">You\u2019re almost there, but Samuel says there\u2019s one final piece to the Copenhagen puzzle. As this move is already creating a ton of tension through your glutes and shoulder blades, keeping your free leg raised and in the proper 90 degree position is serious anti-rotation work for your core. For runners, this position reinforces the posture you want when you run. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Again, you\u2019ll hold a Copenhagen plank nowhere near the same amount of time you would a standard plank. And since it is so challenging, it\u2019s best to make this your first move of your core <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout\" data-node-id=\"32.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">workout<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Remember the Copenhagen keys: maintain stability and squeeze your glutes and shoulder blades while fighting off rotation in both directions.
