A new year has rolled around, the sky is still grey and many of us are nursing hangovers. However, it’s a Bank Holiday, so there’s no better way to while away the first day of January than by sitting back and indulging in some telly.

Fortunately, the BBC, ITV and Netflix have saved some of their biggest hitters for just this occasion. Tuck in.

Harlan Coben’s Run Away

Ben BlackallNetflix

Is it really New Year’s without a Harlan Coben adaptation? I don’t think so; which is why we’re getting yet another one to welcome in 2026. The plot is convoluted, but it basically follows Simon Greene (James Nesbitt), whose daughter Paige ran away from home when she fell in with a bad crowd. When her druggie boyfriend winds up brutally murdered, suspicion falls on Simon – who must solve the case whilst also trying to track down Paige.

It’s classic Coben: wildly implausible, extremely camp and utterly bingeable. Plus, Ruth Jones features as a private investigator. Just what our hungover, tired brains require.

Stranger Things: The Finale

After almost a decade, the Duffer Brothers’ vision of 1980s America is finally coming to an end – and just in time, given that the child actors are now in their early 20s. But first, we have to sit through a nailbiting finale. Will everybody survive? Not likely.

This drops at 1am UK time, so if you fancy tacking it onto the end of a New Year’s celebration… well, it would be rude not to.

Laurence Cendrowicz/Bad Wolf/Sony Pictures Television

Jing Lusi returns for the second season of the hit ITV thriller. This time, Richard Armitage is nowhere to be seen; instead, she’s teaming up with Lesley Sharp as Head of MI5 Madeline Delaney, as well as none other than Line of Duty’s Martin Compston. No planes this time; this time, Lusi’s DI Hana Lee is charged with investigating the case of a US ambassadorial courier who is killed before he can deliver his diplomatic mail.

Once inside the American Embassy, things go south when an intruder disables the security system and begins killing the guests and staff. With the building in lockdown, can Hana solve the case?

Alas, Celebrity Traitors is over for another year. But at least we get another round of The Traitors: Joe Public edition. Twenty or so contestants will be returning to Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands to battle it out for a massive cash prize. The catch, of course, is that some of the group are Traitors, tasked with murdering their fellow contestants. The rest of the group must root them out and ‘banish’ them first. Always good fun!

The Night Manager Season 2

CREDIT LINE:BBC/Ink Factory/Des Willie

Ten whole years after it first aired, we’re getting another season of The Night Manager. Tom Hiddleston and his receding hairline return to play Jonathan Pine, a former British intelligence operative turned hotel staff, and this time around he has a whole new job to do. Namely, expose a conspiracy before it destabilises an entire nation. Along the way, there’ll be beautiful women, guns and probably some light backstabbing. Oh, and Olivia Colman is back as Angela Burr. Hooray!

Brendan O’Carroll is back (as, indeed, he is every year) for yet more Mrs Brown’s Boys. After the events of the Christmas Special, which involved a lot of chat about the meaning of family, this time around there’s a storm inbound. Plus, Buster’s fretting about his upcoming birthday parachute jump, and a lost nun wanders in.

Half an hour of Mrs Brown’s Boys not enough? Well, Shedites is made by the same team, so chances are you’ll enjoy it. This new comedy is set in a village in Ireland – specifically something called the ‘men’s shed’.

According to the show notes, this mysterious shed is “place where men make themselves useful building and repairing things, and along the way find company through unlikely friendships, a sense of purpose, and a mug of strong tea. For many, the men’s sheds offer a new lease of life, and the Rathbowen shed is no exception.”

Welcome to 2026!
