Water started flowing into the often-dry, salty plain at the continent\u2019s lowest point <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/water-pours-into-australias-lake-eyre-154451\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in early May<\/a> after torrential rains in Queensland\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/154116\/floodwaters-surge-through-the-australian-outback\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flooded several rivers<\/a>\u00a0that drain toward it. The lake <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/cooper-creek-replenishes-lake-eyre-154803\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued to fill<\/a> in the ensuing months, reaching levels rarely seen.<\/p>\n<p>The lake turned a corner in early October, spring in Australia. Tributaries feeding the basin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/2023328641405080\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slowed to a trickle<\/a>, and evaporation started outpacing inflow from rivers, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-07\/kati-thanda-lake-eyre-fills-up-south-australia\/105856956\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local observers<\/a>. By the start of December, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeeyreyc.com\/Status\/latest.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Eyre Yacht Club reported<\/a> that the rivers had dried up, temperatures had warmed with the arrival of summer, and lake levels were dropping rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>As it dried, Lake Eyre displayed more striking changes visible to satellites. The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat\/oli\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OLI<\/a>\u00a0(Operational Land Imager) on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-8\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Landsat 8<\/a>\u00a0acquired this natural-color image of Lake Eyre on December 15, 2025. The two deepest parts of the lake\u2014Belt Bay and Madigan Gulf\u2014still contained some water, which took on greenish and reddish hues, respectively. (From closer vantage points, Madigan Gulf can appear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/744002275323772\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pink and even orange<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>As Lake Eyre evaporates, the remaining water becomes increasingly saline. Halophilic, or salt-loving, microorganisms thrive in these waters, enough to alter its color over large areas. Direct water samples are needed to identify what microbes are present in Lake Eyre. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rssa.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/nh_north_east_deserts.pdf#page=100\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Past analyses<\/a> have detected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/immunology-and-microbiology\/dunaliella-salina\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dunaliella salina<\/a> algae in samples, and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0140-1963(18)31179-0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> of different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2022-01-05\/pink-lakes-why-does-australia-have-so-many\/100664354\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pink-colored lakes<\/a> have found the same algae, along with populations of other halophilic bacteria and archaea. Many of these species are known to produce pigmented compounds such as carotenoids that are colored pink, orange, or red.<\/p>\n<p>Salt-loving algae and bacteria are sensitive to salinity levels and other environmental factors. Different conditions in Belt Bay and Madigan Gulf may support different microbial mixes, accounting for their contrasting colors. A similar-looking <a href=\"https:\/\/wildlife.utah.gov\/gslep\/wildlife\/algae.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contrast<\/a> between greenish and reddish waters sometimes occurs in Utah\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/sweeping-vistas-above-the-great-salt-lake-154632\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Great Salt Lake<\/a>, where a causeway prevents water in the lake\u2019s north and south arms from mixing. Varied salinity, water depth, and microbe populations also <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/from-salt-production-to-salt-marsh-87379\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">affect water color<\/a> in San Francisco Bay-area salt ponds.<\/p>\n<p>Just how long water will remain in Lake Eyre will depend largely on summer heat and evaporation rates. As an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldatlas.com\/lakes\/the-world-s-largest-endorheic-lakes-explained.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endorheic lake<\/a>, it has no outflow, and this part of the outback receives very little rain.
