While surpassing 2024\u2019s haul, last year\u2019s total trailed the 54.92 billion yuan recorded in 2023.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Local films continued to dominate the world\u2019s second-largest movie market, accounting for 79.67 per cent of total takings \u2013 about a percentage point higher than a year earlier. Of the 51 films grossing more than 100 million yuan, 33 were domestic titles.<\/p>\n<p>The recovery was anchored by the domestic animated fantasy <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/entertainment\/article\/3299423\/ne-zha-2-movie-review-record-breaking-chinese-animation-sequel-spectacular-watch?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ne Zha 2<\/a>, which drew a record 324 million viewers and contributed nearly a third of total annual sales.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The film, about a mythological Chinese hero, grossed nearly US$2.20 billion globally, ranking fifth all-time, with 97 per cent of revenue coming from mainland China, according to box-office tracker Dengta Data. Dengta said the movie brought back large numbers of moviegoers who had not visited cinemas since 2018 or 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Another stand-out was the American animated sequel <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/entertainment\/article\/3334029\/zootopia-2-movie-review-disneys-formulaic-animated-sequel-delights-visual-wit?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zootopia 2<\/a>, which ranked second at China\u2019s box office with 102 million viewers, setting a record for imported films.
