Usually, the amount of each nutrient doesn\u2019t vary steeply within the umbrella of that particular fruit, but if you\u2019re a stickler for exact data, it\u2019s worth keeping in mind.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">More broadly speaking, pears have the edge when it comes to fiber, protein, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. \u201cPears are especially rich in fiber&#8230;including soluble fiber that supports healthy cholesterol levels and feeds beneficial gut bacteria,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vnutritionandwellness.com\/author\/kathleen-benson\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.vnutritionandwellness.com\/author\/kathleen-benson\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kathleen Benson, C.S.S.D., C.P.T., R.D.N\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kathleen Benson, C.S.S.D., C.P.T., R.D.N<\/a>., at VNutrition. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But apples come close in several categories, and ultimately beat pears when it comes to another key nutrient: vitamin C. <\/p>\n<p>Apple nutrition<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2709215\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2709215\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)<\/a>, 100 grams of raw apple contains:<\/p>\n<p>61 calories14.8 grams of carbohydrates0.17 grams of protein0.15 grams of fat2.1 grams of fiber12.8 grams of sugar5 mg of calcium5 mg of magnesium104 mg of potassium3 mcg of vitamin A4.6 mg of vitamin C<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cApples are a great source&#8230;of vitamin C, antioxidants, and some varieties contain quercetin, a plant compound found in the skin that has anti-inflammatory and heart-health benefits,\u201d Manaker points out.<\/p>\n<p>Pear nutrition<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Here\u2019s how the <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/169118\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/169118\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"USDA\" data-node-id=\"15.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">USDA<\/a> says that 100 grams of raw pear stacks up:<\/p>\n<p>57 calories15.2 grams of carbohydrates0.36 grams of protein0.14 grams of fat3.1 grams of fiber9.75 grams of sugar9 mg of calcium7 mg of magnesium116 mg of potassium1 mcg of vitamin A4.3 mg of vitamin C<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Another thing to remember is that this data applies to equal amounts of apples or pears. But when you\u2019re grabbing food, it\u2019s very unlikely you\u2019ll end up with a perfect 100 grams of either. <\/p>\n<p>Apple benefits<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cApples are a great source of soluble fiber, particularly pectin, which can help lower cholesterol and support gut health,\u201d Manaker says. In fact, studies have suggested these properties may be associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6417679\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6417679\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"weight management\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weight management<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8231327\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8231327\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lowering inflammation\" data-node-id=\"20.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lowering inflammation<\/a>. Apples also pack a slew of nutrients. \u201cOne standout compound is quercetin, a polyphenol linked to anti-inflammatory effects and cardiovascular support,\u201d adds Benson. \u201cApples also offer natural sweetness that can help satisfy cravings while supporting overall dietary balance.\u201d They\u2019re a good source of vitamin C as well.<\/p>\n<p>Pear benefits<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Pears offer fiber, a negligible amount more than apples. Getting enough fiber from any dietary source may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/pick-apples-for-a-bushel-of-health-benefits\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org\/hometown-health\/speaking-of-health\/pick-apples-for-a-bushel-of-health-benefits\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"help with\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help with<\/a> lowering blood pressure and blood sugar levels, but pears may be better suited for it between the two. \u201cWith their lower glycemic index, pears can be a good choice for managing blood sugar levels,\u201d Manaker says. Though they may still cause blood sugar variations (as is the case with carbohydrates), the fiber helps curb spikes.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Both <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/746773\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/746773\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pears\" data-node-id=\"23.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pears<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1750342\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1750342\/nutrients\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"apples\" data-node-id=\"23.3\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apples<\/a> are around 84-85% water, which Benson notes makes them \u201cnaturally hydrating,\u201d while pears specifically are known for being \u201csupportive of digestive regularity.\u201d They also are a good source of vitamin A.<\/p>\n<p>Potential downsides of apples and pears<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">You may not expect there to be any downsides to eating nutritious fruit, but that isn\u2019t quite the case. The high fructose content in apples can make digesting them difficult for some people, Manaker explains.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cBoth apples and pears are higher in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/healthy-eating\/a19756314\/fodmap-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.prevention.com\/food-nutrition\/healthy-eating\/a19756314\/fodmap-diet\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"FODMAPs\" data-node-id=\"26.1\" class=\"body-link css-inlxvj emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FODMAPs<\/a>, which are types of carbohydrate chains that may trigger bloating, gas, or other digestive symptoms in individuals with IBS or sensitive digestion,\u201d says Benson. \u201cPortion size and individual tolerance should be considered, especially for those prone to GI symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apple vs. pear: Which is better for you?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So which fruit stands tall at the end? Well, that depends on you.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you add apples to your diet and struggle with digestion, or simply want more fiber, try swapping them for pears.
