The ending of Stranger Things has left viewers debating one central question: Is Eleven alive or dead after the finale? The show\u2019s creators, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, have now explained.<\/p>\n

Does El live or die in Stranger Things finale?<\/p>\n

According to the Duffer Brothers, ambiguity was always the plan. The series\u2019 final moments<\/a> show Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Max finishing their last Dungeons & Dragons campaign before closing the door to the Wheelers\u2019 basement: a symbolic farewell the creators say they had envisioned \u201cfor a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

During that final D&D sequence, Mike imagines a future where Eleven escapes the Upside Down and lives quietly elsewhere. Matt Duffer explained why the show doesn\u2019t confirm whether that vision is real. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we wanted to do was confront the reality of what her situation was after all of this and how could she live a normal life,\u201d Matt Duffer told Netflix<\/a>. \u201cThere are two roads that Eleven could take\u2026 Mike is the optimist of the group and has chosen to believe in that story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ross Duffer added that there was never a version of the ending<\/a> where Eleven simply returned to everyday life in Hawkins. \u201cThere was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end,\u201d he said. \u201cShe represents magic in a lot of ways and the magic of childhood\u2026 Eleven had to go away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The brothers emphasized that removing her powers or giving her a tidy ending felt wrong. Instead, they wanted the characters and the audience to hold onto hope. \u201cWe thought it would be beautiful if our characters continued to believe in that happier ending even if we didn\u2019t give them a clear answer,\u201d Ross Duffer said.<\/p>\n
