Council members adopted the provisional programme of work for the month earlier today (2 January).<\/p>\n<p>Somalia intends to\u00a0organise\u00a0one\u00a0signature event,\u00a0an open debate\u00a0titled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/rule-of-law-2.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cReaffirming international rule of law: pathways to reinvigorating peace, justice, and multilateralism\u201d<\/a>\u00a0under the \u201cPromotion and strengthening\u00a0of the rule of law in the maintenance of international peace and security\u201d agenda item.\u00a0Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to chair the meeting.\u00a0Possible briefers\u00a0include\u00a0Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres;\u00a0Chairperson of the African Union\u00a0(AU)\u00a0Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf;\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Founding President of the African\u00a0Institute of International Law, Judge\u00a0Abdulqawi\u00a0Ahmed\u00a0Yusuf.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamud is also expected to chair the quarterly open debate on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/the-middle-east-including-the-palestinian-question-23.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question\u201d<\/a> (MEPQ), which will be held at high level this month. Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident Coordinator at the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) Ramiz Alakbarov is expected to brief. A civil society representative may also brief.<\/p>\n<p>Several other Middle Eastern issues are expected to be discussed in January.<\/p>\n<p>The Security Council will hold its regular monthly meeting on political and humanitarian issues in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/syria-87.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syria<\/a>. Officials from the UN Secretariat and from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) are expected to brief.<\/p>\n<p>The Council will convene for its monthly briefing and consultations on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/yemen-86.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yemen<\/a>. The anticipated briefers are Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and an OCHA official. This month, the Council is scheduled to vote on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA). Council members are also expected to discuss the extension of the monthly reporting requirement for the Secretary-General contained in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digitallibrary.un.org\/record\/4033392?ln=en&amp;v=pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resolution 2722<\/a>\u00a0of 10 January 2024 on attacks by the Houthi rebel group\u00a0on merchant and commercial vessels in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding African issues, the International Criminal Court (ICC) Deputy Prosecutor, Nazhat Shameem Khan, will provide the\u00a0semi-annual briefing on the ICC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/sudan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darfur<\/a>-related activities.<\/p>\n<p>The Council\u00a0also expects\u00a0to renew\u00a0the mandate of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/unowas-west-africa-and-the-sahel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS)<\/a>, which expires on 31 January,\u00a0through an exchange of letters\u00a0with the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding European files, the Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/cyprus-17.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)<\/a> ahead of its 31 January expiry. Earlier in the month, Council members will receive a briefing in consultations on the situation in Cyprus from Special Representative and Head of UNFICYP Khassim Diagne.\u00a0The Council will also hold a private meeting with UNFICYP troop-contributing countries, at which Diagne is expected to participate.<\/p>\n<p>Two meetings on the Americas are scheduled this month.<\/p>\n<p>The Security Council will hold its quarterly briefing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/colombia-32.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colombia<\/a>. Special Representative and Head of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia Miroslav Jen\u010da is the anticipated briefer. Closed consultations are scheduled to follow the open briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/haiti-33.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH)<\/a> prior to its\u00a031 January expiry. It will also receive the 90-day briefing on the situation in Haiti from Special Representative and Head of BINUH Carlos Ruiz Massieu. Closed consultations are scheduled to follow the open briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The one Asian issue planned for January is the semi-annual briefing in consultations on the work of\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.securitycouncilreport.org\/monthly-forecast\/2026-01\/unrcca-central-asia-15.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy\u00a0for\u00a0Central Asia (UNRCCA)<\/a>.
