{"id":217792,"date":"2026-01-03T05:16:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T05:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/217792\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T05:16:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T05:16:07","slug":"how-kate-winslets-acting-prepared-her-for-directing-goodbye-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/217792\/","title":{"rendered":"How Kate Winslet&#8217;s Acting Prepared Her for Directing Goodbye June"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/kate-winslet-directorial-debut-goodbye-june-netflix-1236138420\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">directorial debut<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/kate-winslet\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kate-winslet_1\" data-tag=\"kate-winslet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Winslet<\/a> made a star-studded family drama, in which she was one of the actors, over just seven weeks, securing star Helen Mirren for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/netflix-kate-winslet-film-joe-anders-christmas-goodbye-june-1236435947\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only 16 days<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe schedule and Winslet\u2019s dual roles were just some of the many challenges she faced helming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/goodbye-june-review-kate-winslet-netflix-helen-mirren-1236445864\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goodbye June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe were constantly trying to make sure that we were all making our days. I never wanted to drop anything, and I didn\u2019t. I was very proud of that,\u201d Winslet recently told The Hollywood Reporter at a special screening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netflix<\/a> movie in New York, speaking of the shortened filming schedule. \u201cWe had seven children in the film as well as all of our adult actors, so just the constant juggle of that and being in front of the camera as well as behind it, just the juggle of it all we had to adapt to very quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tStill, she \u201cloved\u201d the experience, she said, unprovoked, adding, when asked if she wants to direct again, \u201cI really hope I do. I would love to direct again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd Winslet\u2019s extensive acting career, including the bonds she\u2019d developed with others in the industry through her 30 years in front of the camera, was key to this endeavor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cBeing able to really lean on great relationships that I\u2019ve developed over the years, that was very meaningful, because we needed to have that sense of goodwill around us,\u201d Winslet said, adding that it was imperative to have people who were \u201cgood humored, really willing and supportive of one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor the role of June\u2019s (Mirren) husband Bernie, Winslet approached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/timothy-spall\/\" id=\"auto-tag_timothy-spall_1\" data-tag=\"timothy-spall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Timothy Spall<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/goodbye-june-trailer-kate-winslet\" target=\"_blank\">with whom she\u2019d worked 30 years before on a production of Hamlet<\/a>, and it was this past experience as well as the strength of the script, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/kate-winslet-joe-anders-goodbye-june-netflix-collaboration-1236434912\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">written by Winslet\u2019s son, Joe Anders<\/a>, that convinced Spall to board the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI knew that she was a very special person and a very special actress,\u201d Spall told THR of Winslet at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/goodbye-june\/\" id=\"auto-tag_goodbye-june_1\" data-tag=\"goodbye-june\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goodbye June<\/a> screening. \u201cWhen I read the script, I said I wouldn\u2019t be able to do it because I was working too hard. But I read it the following day and told her I wanted to do it because it\u2019s so fantastic. And she, I knew, would be all over it because of the way she spoke about it. It was so close to her and such a sense of what it was going to be about. Given her brilliance as an actress and what she\u2019s experienced as an actress, I knew she\u2019d be absolutely perfect. It was time for her to direct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd as a director, Winslet lived up to Spall\u2019s expectations, with him calling her \u201cone of the best directors I\u2019ve ever worked with\u201d and praising her for doing \u201ca massive amount of preparation\u201d but making the process \u201cfeel completely natural.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cShe did all the work, all the amazing work it takes. She covered every department; she cast it so well; she chose the people to be behind the camera and in front of the camera,\u201d Spall explained. \u201cShe was so brilliant about being in charge of things and making you feel as though it\u2019s all happening at the same time. That takes a bit of genius. That takes a very good heart, massive intelligence, a lot of confidence and a lot of openness, and she\u2019s got all of those things. It\u2019s not an easy thing to direct a movie because it\u2019s like being the president or the prime minister. You\u2019ve got a lot of things to take into consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCo-star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/toni-collette\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toni-collette_1\" data-tag=\"toni-collette\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toni Collette<\/a>, who plays one of Winslet\u2019s character\u2019s sisters and June\u2019s daughter, echoed this praise of the low-key set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was just easy. It was like a totally natural progression for her, having worked in film for 30 years and worked with so many wonderful directors,\u201d Collette told THR. \u201cShe creates an incredible atmosphere of freedom. It just felt very grounded, very accepting, very relaxed and free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/wayward-review-mae-martin-toni-collette-netflix-sarah-gadon-1236379010\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/wayward-review-mae-martin-toni-collette-netflix-sarah-gadon-1236379010\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wayward<\/a> star also spoke about how Winslet\u2019s experience as an actress helped her behind the camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe one thing I think we have on our side as actors is we get to work with a lot of different directors. Directors don\u2019t get to do that,\u201d Collette told THR. \u201cSo they get to see how other people work. She could obviously have her own intelligence and intuition but also take from all of the wonderful people she\u2019d worked with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnd for Collette personally, working with Winslet was the fulfillment of a decades-long desire to collaborate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI have wanted to work with Kate for decades. I have been a fan. There\u2019s so much in her that I admire as a person, her work, her career, everything, what she stands for, what she fights for,\u201d Collette said. \u201cI got a call out of the blue saying she wanted to talk to me about a project. Then I heard that she was directing. I mean, I would have been happy acting, but when someone chooses you to be in their directorial debut, it\u2019s such an honor. I spoke to her within 48 hours. She took me through the story. I was like, sign me up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShe continued, \u201cWhen I read [the script], it was completely heartbreaking and also made my heart soar in the best possible way because it\u2019s such a realistic, gorgeous story about this average, dysfunctional family going through something really, really challenging. I just think it\u2019s a really special story. And she just put the most incredible group of people together on and offscreen.
