The role of Artificial Intelligence in music-making has been one of the most debated topics of late \u2013 and Slipknot<\/a>\u2019s Shawn \u2018Clown\u2019 Crahan is among the few heavy metal musicians speaking openly in its favour.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with The Escapist<\/a>, the Slipknot co-founder and percussionist praises AI as \u201ca professor in my pocket who only wants to do what I ask it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m employing AI 190 percent,\u201d Clown says, explaining that he\u2019s been using it \u201cmy whole life\u201d as a tool to refine his work. Over the years, he claims to have transformed \u201cthousands and thousands\u201d of poems he\u2019s written since he was young into new creative forms.<\/p>\n

Demonstrating how he uses the tech, Clown tells the publication: \u201cHere are my words. Don\u2019t change them. Don\u2019t alter them. But show me some different ways to sing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musician also points out the financial benefits of AI, comparing it to hiring a big-name producer \u2013 which could cost a small fortune:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the difference between me pulling out my pocket producer\u2026 or me trying to get a famous producer that might not even work with me and could potentially cost me $150,000\u2026 who will only give me one or two ways \u2013 I\u2019m not mentioning any names!\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Clown stresses the human element remains essential: \u201cBut it\u2019s still going to take me to sing it. And it will never be like it was,\u201d he adds. \u201cNone of it can work without you, the human. It\u2019s a giant oracle\u2026 but it needs you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crahan\u2019s embrace of AI comes amid widespread controversy over the technology\u2019s role in music creation. Critics have raised concerns over copyright and the value of human musical expression \u2013 a debate that\u2019s seen contributions from rock\u2019s wider community. Guitar legend Brian May<\/a>, for one, recently warned that AI training on copyrighted material could make music creation \u2018unaffordable\u2019<\/a> for artists, while blues\u2011rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd<\/a> said that AI-created music might become the norm even if it lacks the depth of a \u201cfallible human\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By contrast, not everyone in Slipknot\u2019s orbit shares Clown\u2019s optimism.
