This change is part of a province-wide shift under\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/16r12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ontario\u2019s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016<\/a>, which makes producers responsible for the collection, processing and recycling of products and packaging.<\/p>\n<p>A new recycling collector, Emterra Environmental, will be picking up recycling from homes across Kawartha Lakes on behalf of Circular Materials Ontario (CMO). Garbage collection will continue with Miller Waste, and both garbage and recycling will still be collected on the same day, just by different trucks.<\/p>\n<p>New materials accepted in the Blue Box\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of January 1, a number of items previously placed in regular waste have moved to recycling.<\/p>\n<p>New to the Blue (Container) Bin<br \/>\nNew to the Green (Paper\/Fibre) Bin<\/p>\n<p>Cereal bags<br \/>\nFlexible plastics (milk bags, bread bags)<\/p>\n<p>Toothpaste tubs, deodorant, hand cream tubes<br \/>\nChip bags, granola\/candy wrappers and bubble wrap<\/p>\n<p>Plastic cutlery<\/p>\n<p>Coffee and fast food cups<\/p>\n<p>Pet food bags<\/p>\n<p>Straws<\/p>\n<p>Styrofoam<\/p>\n<p>Small item plastic packaging<\/p>\n<p>Empty aerosol containers<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Impacts for businesses and organizations\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Curbside recycling collection under the new program is limited to residential properties only.\u00a0Recycling collection is no longer provided to:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Private-sector businesses<br \/>\nCommercial portions of mixed-use buildings<br \/>\nPlaces of worship<br \/>\nCommercial farms<br \/>\nMunicipal buildings and facilities<br \/>\nNon-profit organizations (e.g., shelters, food banks)<br \/>\nDaycares and post-secondary institutions<\/p>\n<p>These properties can continue to recycle by using the City\u2019s five landfill depot locations (tipping fees apply) or by arranging private recycling collection.
