{"id":220141,"date":"2026-01-04T15:36:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T15:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/220141\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T15:36:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T15:36:15","slug":"ben-gvirs-dismissal-will-not-happen-vows-netanyahu-bucking-ags-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/220141\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben Gvir&#8217;s dismissal &#8216;will not happen,&#8217; vows Netanyahu, bucking AG&#8217;s pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly declared Sunday that he would not fire National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, sparking a tense exchange with Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon over the matter during a cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The spat took place days after Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara said in a High Court of Justice filing that Netanyahu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ag-to-high-court-netanyahu-should-be-made-to-explain-why-he-hasnt-fired-ben-gvir\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">must be ordered to explain why he hasn\u2019t fired Ben Gvir,<\/a> accusing the far-right minister of systematically abusing his powers.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs said there is no precedent for firing a minister without an indictment. To do so would \u201cbreak the system\u201d and signal \u201cthe end of democracy,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the absence of an indictment, Limon insisted that Ben Gvir has harmed the independence of the police force over the course of his term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast night,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/man-shot-dead-by-police-in-bedouin-town-during-raid-ben-gvir-praises-forces\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> a citizen was shot in Tarabin<\/a> and Ben Gvir didn\u2019t investigate but immediately backed [law enforcement]. (Yonatan Sindel\/Flash90)<\/p>\n<p>Ben Gvir, who was present at the meeting, turned the allegations of interference back on Limon, calling him a \u201ccriminal\u201d for an email he sent regarding the Sde Teiman leak investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are [discussing] interfering in investigations, you are a criminal,\u201d Ben Gvir claimed. \u201cYou interfered in an investigation you shouldn\u2019t have in the case of the military advocate general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ben Gvir accused Limon of interference for asking via email when the investigation would end, while having a potential conflict of interest in the case.<\/p>\n<p>In December, Baharav-Miara endorsed petitions calling for Ben Gvir\u2019s dismissal over what she characterized as his routine violation of a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/ag-said-to-reach-compromise-with-ben-gvir-on-national-security-ministers-powers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> legally binding compromise the two agreed upon last year<\/a> in which he agreed to strictly limit his involvement in police matters.<\/p>\n<p>She has on several occasions accused the far-right minister of exercising undue influence over the police, a force meant to operate independently, without pressure from elected officials.<\/p>\n<p>Baharav-Miara last week implicated Netanyahu in her High Court filing, demanding judges issue an interim injunction to\u201d transfer the burden of proof\u201d to the premier, which would force him to explain why Ben Gvir should be allowed to continue in his role of national security minister.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0009714.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3631938\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/0009714.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1300\" height=\"813\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tLeft to right: National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir seen after a visit at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on August 3, 2025.
