{"id":220530,"date":"2026-01-04T21:01:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T21:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/220530\/"},"modified":"2026-01-04T21:01:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-04T21:01:11","slug":"enough-with-the-misery-hostage-twins-gali-and-ziv-berman-want-to-move-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/220530\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Enough with the misery&#8217;: Hostage twins Gali and Ziv Berman want to move on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gali and Ziv Berman, the 28-year-old twins who were held for two years in Hamas captivity in Gaza, opened up about their kidnapping, captivity, release and recovery in a wide-ranging interview about their ordeal that aired Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The two fraternal twins were taken hostage by terrorists from Kibbutz Kfar Aza during the Hamas-led invasion and onslaught in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, along with 17 other Kfar Aza residents. They were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/the-living-hostages-expected-to-be-released-from-gaza-under-the-ceasefire-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">released<\/a> in the truce that began in October, and are now looking to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to deal with the misery anymore,\u201d Gali said in the interview with Channel 12, which was filmed on the front porch of their house and around Kfar Aza.<\/p>\n<p>Ziv agreed: \u201cWe had misery for two years. He then got a video call from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/topic\/emily-damari\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emily Damari<\/a>, a close friend from the Kibbutz.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3124226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/F231015CG122-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIsraeli soldiers survey the destruction caused by Hamas terrorists in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, near the Israel-Gaza border, in southern Israel, October 15, 2023. He then ran to her house, unaware that Hamas-led terrorists were already running roughshod through the kibbutz.<\/p>\n<p>When he arrived at Damari\u2019s house, the two waited inside her shelter with her small dog, Chucha. The house was soon surrounded by gunmen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey shot the dog, shot Emily, and told us: \u2018Come on, get up!\u2019\u201d Gali recalled. The two were then taken into Gaza, with Damari suffering a gunshot wound to her hand, which would eventually<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/freed-hostage-emily-damari-undergoes-surgery-on-hand-shot-on-october-7\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> cost her<\/a> two fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, back at their house, Gali\u2019s brother Ziv was also captured.<\/p>\n<p>The twins were held in different tunnels in severe conditions for the first months of the war, and were both unaware that the other had been taken hostage, or that they had even survived the initial attack.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the difficult conditions, Gali refused to give up hope of seeing his twin brother again: \u201cEvery day I told them: \u2018I want to see my brother,\u2019\u201d he said, after learning that his brother was also a hostage.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3658627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/20251007_untitled_04832-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe images of hostages Gali and Ziv Berman, in Kfar Aza, October 7, 2025. (Luke Tress\/Times of Israel)<\/p>\n<p>After 183 days, Gali was moved to another tunnel, fitted with a microphone, and placed in front of a video camera. Moments later, Ziv was brought in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw Gali, ran to him and started crying,\u201d Ziv recalled, adding that they embraced for nearly ten minutes as their captors filmed the reunion.<\/p>\n<p>They were only allowed to remain together for two days, they said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ziv, Hamas operatives told them they \u201ccould not be held together,\u201d since if something were to happen to both of them, \u201cyour mother wouldn\u2019t have to cry twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gali chimed in sarcastically: \u201cSee how considerate they are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like they take a part of your body away from you,\u201d he said of their separation.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3726595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vlcsnap-2026-01-04-20h03m45s989-copy-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tScreenshot of former hostages Gali (R) and Ziv Berman, alongside their mother Talia, in an interview with Channel 12, aired January 3, 2025. (Screenshot\/Channel 12)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I didn\u2019t want to be seen as weak\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The twins\u2019 mother, Talia, said that she waited 11 days to first receive information about her sons\u2019 fates after October 7.<\/p>\n<p>When she received intelligence suggesting they were alive, she struggled to believe it: \u201cI felt they were lying to me,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was a total breakdown. I mourned both sons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was only on the 50th day, she said, after hostages who were released in the November 2023 ceasefire told her they had seen the twins alive, that she allowed herself to hope.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout most of the two years that her sons were held hostage, Talia avoided public appearances. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be seen as weak,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>The public campaign for the twins\u2019 return was led largely by her sister, the boys\u2019 aunt Maccabit Meyer. (Jessica Steinberg\/Times of Israel)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew my mom would turn the world upside down for me, do everything,\u201d Ziv said, \u201cbut when I didn\u2019t see her anywhere, I said: Okay, maybe the worst happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gali and Ziv\u2019s father, Doron, has Parkinson\u2019s Disease, a condition that deteriorated significantly during his sons\u2019 time in captivity. When Talia first broke the news to him that the twins had been captured, \u201cit was the hardest day of his life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the magnitude of the catastrophe that had befallen his family, he stopped eating, drinking and taking medication. He was hospitalized and remains in the hospital even now.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of imminent death<\/p>\n<p>Turning to their captivity, Ziv detailed one of the most terrifying moments of his time in Gaza, which he endured with fellow hostage Omri Miran, as Israeli military activity intensified on the ground above their tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA D9 [armored bulldozer] above us, tanks above us, you hear houses collapsing on you, sand falling on you, the whole tunnel moves,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3213694\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AFP__20240131__34HC2QR__v2__HighRes__IsraelPalestinianConflict-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tAn explosion erupts as a dark smoke plume rises in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas on January 31, 2024. (Jack Guez\/AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Their captors shouted: \u201cThe army is here, the army is coming down, the army is in the tunnel.\u201d Ziv recalled. \u201cI start to feel \u2014 don\u2019t know if it\u2019s hyperventilation or adrenaline \u2014 but my legs are shaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Believing death was imminent, he said, \u201cOmri and I already began saying goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gali, who was held in a different tunnel, said he endured captivity thanks to a hidden notebook, in which he wrote down his dreams and fears.<\/p>\n<p>Beachside BBQ with Hamas chief<\/p>\n<p>The twins\u2019 first meeting was not the only time they would be reunited inside Gaza, as another would come in the form of an odd event that took place in early 2025, after a ceasefire was signed that January.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the war\u2019s pause, Ziv recalled, Hamas\u2019s Gaza chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/hamass-new-gaza-leader-a-hebrew-speaking-ghost-with-a-750000-price-on-his-head\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Izz al-Din al-Haddad<\/a> took several hostages, including both Berman twins, to the beach for a barbecue, where they grilled meat alongside armed operatives.<\/p>\n<p>\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3548838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/az-adin-al-hadad-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tHamas Gaza chief Izz al-Din Haddad, then the commander of Hamas\u2019s Gaza City Brigade, is seen in a video released by Hamas\u2019s military wing in May 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey filmed a nice video, with a long table set up with all sorts of fruit and vegetables,\u201d he said, describing the elaborate setup for a propaganda video, which Hamas never released.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Haddad] ate alongside us,\u201d he continued, adding that he spoke with the hostages only in Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all a big act for him,\u201d Gali said of Haddad, who assumed the terror group\u2019s top position in Gaza after Israel killed October 7 mastermind Yahya Sinwar in October 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Berman twins were then separated again, and would not see each other until their release over nine months later.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018My family is whole again\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Just over two years after they were captured, on October 9, 2025, Israel and Hamas agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire and hostage release deal, and the brothers were set to return home.<\/p>\n<p>They were finally reunited for a third and final time when they were transferred from the Red Cross, which received the released hostages from Hamas, into Israeli military custody to be escorted back into Israel. (Eran Yarden\/Government Press Office)<\/p>\n<p>After initial medical examinations and a few days\u2019 stay in a hospital, they were finally taken to their father, Doron.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe looked at them, looking from side to side with his beautiful green eyes, as if he couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d Talia said of the reunion, though she said that Doron\u2019s condition had worsened to the point where he could no longer speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, Doron will never be healthy, okay?\u201d Talia said, \u201cBut he\u2019s with us, he experiences things and he feels things, and I finally feel that my family is whole again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trauma and hope<\/p>\n<p>While the twins were overjoyed to be back home, they said that the intense trauma of their captivity lingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no shortage,\u201d Ziv admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust a few days ago I saw Chucha in a dream,\u201d Gali added, recalling Emily Damari\u2019s dog, who was killed during their abduction.<\/p>\n<p>Their mother, Talia, remains anxious.<\/p>\n<p>When she asked whether they had suffered severe abuse, Gali deflected with humor: \u201cThey bathed me. For now, the Bermans live in Kibbutz Beit Guvrin, an hour north of where they grew up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan anyone guarantee me safety there?\u201d Gali responded when asked if he was ready to move back home.<\/p>\n<p>For Talia, the answer is clear: \u201cNo experience will ever repair what we went through.
