PALO ALTO, Calif. \u2013 No. 3 Iowa State rallied from an 11-point deficit at the intermission to defeat No. 24 Stanford, 20-18, Sunday afternoon inside a rowdy Maples Pavilion. The shorthanded Cyclones were absent five regular starters from their lineup but won four of the final five bouts to win a dual that came down to the final match.<\/p>\n
Iowa State (4-1, 0-0 Big 12) and Stanford (2-4, 0-0 ACC) split the ten bouts with five wins apiece, but ISU held the edge with three bonus-point victories, including tech falls from Connor Euton<\/a> and Yonger Bastida<\/a>. The Cyclones won the takedown battle, 17-13.<\/p>\n Stanford started the dual with victories at 125 and 133 pounds, including a bonus point in the later, but Anthony Echemendia<\/a> got the Cyclones on the board at 141 pounds. Echemendia secured three takedowns to defeat Jack Consiglio, 11-1, and pull ISU to within 7-4 in the team score. Echemendia improved to 9-1 on the season.<\/p>\n Stanford took a 15-4 advantage into the intermission following wins at 149 and 157 pounds, which included a tech fall at 157 pounds. The Cyclones would win four of the next five bouts.<\/p>\n At 165 pounds, No. 18 Connor Euton<\/a> pushed the pace early in a 19-4 tech fall over Zach Hanson. Euton improved to 6-2 on the season and recorded six takedowns in the victory.<\/p>\n Aiden Riggins<\/a> bumped up and got the nod at 174 pounds, earning a crucial 8-3 decision over Collin Guffey. Despite a clear size disadvantage, Riggins controlled the action from neutral and tallied two takedowns in the match.<\/p>\n No. 13 Isaac Dean<\/a> prevailed in a tight 5-3 decision over Abraham Wojcikiewicz at 184 pounds. Dean scored a reversal and a takedown in a decisive second period and fended off a late attack by Wojcikiewicz in the closing seconds of the match.<\/p>\n The Cyclones dropped the 197-pound bout and entered the duals final match trailing, 18-15, in the team score.<\/p>\n Top-ranked Bastida left no doubt as he dismantled Stanford’s Jackson Mankowski, 19-4, in 3:19. Bastida tallied six takedowns to clinch the dual and remain unbeaten on the season.
