It means millions of Aussies now fear they will still be in debt when they die.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">A quarter of Australians, or around 5.6 million people, expect to still <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/warning-over-looming-1600-credit-card-debt-trap-and-how-to-avoid-it-180001211.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:owe money;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">owe money<\/a> when they pass away, exclusive new research by Finder has revealed. That includes 12 per cent who expect to be carrying <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/major-600000-mortgage-warning-for-aussies-jumping-on-controversial-50-year-property-trend-no-free-lunch-213618239.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:mortgage debt;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mortgage debt<\/a>, 11 per cent with personal debt like a credit card or loan, 8 per cent with government debt like <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-womans-38000-degree-regret-as-shes-hit-with-insane-hecs-tax-bill-huge-toll-003353922.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:unpaid HECS;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unpaid HECS<\/a>, and 4 per cent with unpaid fines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Finder money expert Rebecca Pike told Yahoo Finance <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-forklift-driver-able-to-retire-by-30-after-teenage-epiphany-have-to-do-something-different-180004965.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:financial freedom;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">financial freedom<\/a> was slipping \u201cfurther out of reach\u201d for some Aussies, with people realising they may never be debt-free even as they <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/retirement-warning-as-amount-aussies-need-hits-record-76505-per-year-feeling-the-squeeze-030343376.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:plan for retirement;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plan for retirement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">RELATED<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">\u201cThe idea that you could spend your whole life working hard and still owe money when you die is confronting \u2014 but it\u2019s becoming the new reality for millions of Australians,\u201d Pike said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The survey of 1,011 people found more women (30 per cent) than men (22 per cent) expected to die still in debt. Pike said this reflected the ongoing gender gap in pay, super and financial security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">It&#8217;s a stark increase from the one in 10 Australians who believed they would be saddled with debt until they died when Finder surveyed people back in 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">&#8220;We\u2019re seeing a growing acceptance that debt is just part of life \u2014 but that mindset can <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/grim-retirement-trend-as-aussies-forced-to-work-longer-or-ditch-plans-hitting-hard-010053158.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:trap people into working longer;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trap people into working longer<\/a> and saving less for the future,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Nearly two in five (38 per cent) of those surveyed said they were confident they would have all their debt paid by then, while 36 per cent said they were already debt-free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The average Australian household carried $313,633 in total debt in June 2025, Finder\u2019s analysis of ABS data found. The majority came from <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/mortgage-broker-reveals-112000-home-loan-mistake-costing-you-a-bomb-014607311.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:home loans;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">home loans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">The latest HILDA survey found more people were retiring with mortgage debt, rising from 13 per cent in 2003 to 17 per cent in 2023. This may be due to people <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tradies-unattainable-property-confession-reveals-major-shift-for-first-home-buyers-trying-to-enter-market-183049332.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:buying their first home later in life;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">buying their first home later in life<\/a> and borrowing larger amounts due to rising house prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Any debts that you owe when you die will need to be paid from the assets of your estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">\u201cWhen someone dies with debt in Australia, that debt doesn\u2019t just disappear. It\u2019s usually paid out of their estate before any inheritance is passed on \u2014 which can leave loved ones with far less than expected,&#8221; Pike told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">With a mortgage, it will generally be transferred to any co-owner, your estate, or your beneficiary as outlined in your will.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">They may opt to sell the property to pay off the mortgage, continue to own the property and repay the mortgage, or sell other assets in the estate to pay off the mortgage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">With <a data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/millions-of-aussies-to-receive-16-billion-hecs-debt-relief-from-ato-in-days-biggest-cut-ever-011230008.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:HECS debt;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HECS debt<\/a>, any outstanding amount that remains after your death is cancelled. However, you\u2019ll still need to repay any compulsory amounts that were owed up until the day you passed away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">Pike encouraged Aussies to make a plan to pay down their debt and protect their loved ones against the potential financial fallout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">\u201cHaving debt when you die can leave your family dealing with financial stress on top of grief,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">\u201cA clear plan, some savings, and a will can go a long way toward easing that burden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-7hmkaz\">There are free services like the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/ndh.org.au\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007<\/a> that can help you manage debt.
