(Stephan Lam\/San Francisco Chronicle via AP)<\/p>\n<p>Click here to view gallery<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crews cleared mud from key California highways as forecasters warned Sunday that more thunderstorms were on the way after downpours and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/california-king-tides-unleash-massive-waves-43e5d9b8a2744c068f540aa3a140770f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high tides<\/a> caused flooding, road closures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/ck\/a?!&amp;&amp;p=3f88b6c2bdea3cc6e77994070b5b2957577bbcf4a7ebf5beacee3735b0d7d55cJmltdHM9MTc2NzQ4NDgwMA&amp;ptn=3&amp;ver=2&amp;hsh=4&amp;fclid=27f35b79-3b76-6cec-1f04-48a73ae46d47&amp;psq=apnews+california+storms&amp;u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly9hcG5ld3MuY29tL2FydGljbGUvY2FsaWZvcm5pYS1mbG9vZGluZy1yYWluLWtpbmctdGlkZXMtbWFyaW4tYmU1MjBlMGI0ZDUzODMxY2IzMGQ1NGFmNzU2MGY2ZDA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and rescues<\/a> of people trapped in cars.<\/p>\n<p>Five northern counties remained under a flood watch, with up to three inches (7.6 cm) of rain possible through Monday night in areas that have been drenched off and on since around Christmas, said the National Weather Service office in Eureka. At least a foot (.3 meters) of snow was likely in the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>To the south near the San Francisco Bay Area, waters were slowly receding after roadways from Sausalito to San Rafael were flooded during heavy rain that coincided with record-breaking \u201c <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-eb124f208661b2199e2e7088b3dd5ad3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">King Tides<\/a>.\u201d Such tides occur when the moon is in its closest position to the Earth, creating a stronger gravitational pull.<\/p>\n<p>Some people kayaked along swamped streets, while others waded through water above their knees. Authorities were called to assist when cars got stuck in water as high as 3 and 4 feet (1.1 and 1.2 meters), Marin County Sheriff\u2019s Sgt. Michael Dobbins said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been around here for the King Tides and I\u2019ve never seen it this high. Never,\u201d Jeremy Hager of San Rafael told KTVU-TV.<\/p>\n<p>Flooding was reported across Marin, Sonoma, Alameda, San Mateo and San Francisco counties.<\/p>\n<p>While the tides were waning, lingering thunderstorms on Sunday could cause additional problems throughout low-lying areas, forecasters said. \u201cFor anyone driving, slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination,\u201d the Bay Area office of the weather service warned on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Farther south in Santa Barbara County, a key highway was reopened Sunday after it was blocked for most of the weekend near Goleta due to a series of mudslides.
