Just the pursuit of the ingredients is some of the best exercise you can get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That philosophy is at the center of a new boxed set that brings together two of Rinella\u2019s most\u00a0popular cookbooks, \u201cThe MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook\u201d and \u201cThe MeatEater Outdoor Cookbook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He believes\u00a0food, fitness and time outdoors\u00a0are very much connected \u2014 whether meals are prepared in a home kitchen, over a backyard grill or at a remote campsite.<\/p>\n<p>Rinella said\u00a0wild game, although it isn\u2019t necessarily labeled as health food, may be the most natural form of clean eating available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pursuit of the ingredients is some of the best exercise you can get,\u201d Steven Rinella, author of \u201cThe MeatEater Fish and Game Cookbook\u201d and \u201cThe MeatEater Outdoor Cookbook,\u201d said. Facebook\/Steven Rinella<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say it\u2019s the\u00a0healthiest food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Wild game \u201chas powered human beings for tens of thousands of years,\u201d Rinella noted with a smile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not invent this,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important that those eating game meat be sure to cook it at a safe temperature to prevent foodborne illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Rinella, food, fitness and time outdoors are intertwined.<\/p>\n<p>Guidelines from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) call for an internal temperature of at least 145\u00b0 Fahrenheit for bison, veal, goat, lamb or seafood, 160\u00b0 Fahrenheit for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/25\/us-news\/six-people-eat-undercooked-bear-meat-contract-brain-worms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bear meat<\/a>, and 165\u00b0 Fahrenheit for poultry.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike conventional store-bought meat, wild game is naturally lean and fully traceable, Rinella said. In his household, that transparency is intentional, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we eat, we eat stuff where you look, and you can tell where it came from \u2014 that it grew out of the ground, that it came off an animal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/27\/science\/outbreak-of-viral-deer-killing-disease-prompts-alarm-warning-to-meat-eaters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hunting and fishing<\/a>, he said, bring built-in physical activity and time outdoors, elements he sees as essential to health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting our ingredients involves rigorous exercise and time outside,\u201d Rinella said. \u201cI can never decouple those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lifestyle of engaging with nature, being outside, being with people you love, being with your friends, being with your family and making food from the ground up,\u201d Rinella said. \u201cIf you try it, you realize this is\u00a0healthy living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mindset extends\u00a0to cooking.<\/p>\n<p>While wild game can be less familiar than conventional meats, Rinella said he sees that challenge as an invitation to cook with more intention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re cooking wild game, and you don\u2019t like it, there\u2019s one of two problems,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re cooking it too long, or you\u2019re not cooking it long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His recipes emphasize from-scratch preparation and adaptability, especially when working with lean proteins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t use the same chicken and beef playbook,\u201d Rinella said.<\/p>\n<p>Much of that cooking happens outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lifestyle of engaging with nature, being outside, being with people you love, being with your friends, being with your family and making food from the ground up,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat whole package feels very good.
