{"id":222283,"date":"2026-01-05T21:11:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T21:11:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/222283\/"},"modified":"2026-01-05T21:11:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T21:11:08","slug":"corporation-for-public-broadcasting-to-dissolve-after-congress-defunds-npr-pbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/222283\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporation for Public Broadcasting to dissolve after Congress defunds NPR, PBS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced its board voted to dissolve itself after 58 years as an organization after Congress voted last year to pull federal funding allocated to NPR and PBS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;For more than half a century, CPB existed to ensure that all Americans\u2014regardless of geography, income, or background\u2014had access to trusted news, educational programming, and local storytelling,&#8221; CPB president and CEO Patricia Harrison said in a statement Monday.\u00a0&#8220;When the Administration and Congress rescinded federal funding, our Board faced a profound responsibility: CPB\u2019s final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving, rather than\u00a0allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What has happened to public media is devastating,&#8221; CPB\u2019s Board of Directors chair Ruby Calvert said. &#8220;After nearly six decades of innovative, educational public television and radio service, Congress eliminated all funding for CPB, leaving the Board with no way to continue the organization or support the public media system that depends on it. In August, the CPB announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/corporation-public-broadcasting-announces-shut-down-after-trump-congress-cut-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shut down operations<\/a> as a result of the defunding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/house-of-representatives\/republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Republicans<\/a> campaigned on ending federal funding for public media, which had been allocated from the CPB to NPR and PBS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Donald Trump<\/a> and GOP lawmakers successfully rescinded public media funding from its spending bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/npr-ceo-asked-resign-ahead-trump-government-spending-cuts-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NPR CEO WAS ASKED TO RESIGN AHEAD OF TRUMP GOVERNMENT SPENDING CUTS: REPORT<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/donald-trump-oval-office-desk.jpg\" alt=\"Donald trump in the oval office\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump kept his campaign promise to withdraw federal funding from NPR and PBS, an effort pursued by Republicans for decades. (Bonnie Cash\/UPI\/Bloomberg via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, NPR and PBS have been in the crosshairs of Trump and GOP lawmakers over allegations of political bias, which NPR and PBS leadership have vehemently denied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NPR CEO Katherine Maher and PBS CEO Paula Kerger staunchly defended their media organizations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/npr-pbs-honchos-face-tense-grilling-gop-lawmakers-biased-coverage-taxpayer-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">while testifying on Capitol Hill<\/a> in March.
