The items are all set on a tabletop that's orange across the top of the frame and light blue across the bottom.\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a>         <\/p>\n<p>The guidelines will set limits on added sugar and encourage diets that include meat and dairy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Protein and healthy fats are essential and were wrongly discouraged in prior dietary guidelines,&#8221; Kennedy said. &#8220;We are ending the war on saturated fats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As an introduction to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new guidelines<\/a>, Kennedy and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins called for a &#8220;dramatic reduction&#8221; in the consumption of &#8220;highly processed foods laden with refined carbohydrates, added sugars, excess sodium, unhealthy fats, and chemical additives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This approach can change the health trajectory for so many Americans,&#8221; they wrote, pointing out that more than 70% of American adults are overweight or obese due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/24\/nx-s1-5477662\/diet-exercise-obesity-nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diet that has<\/a> &#8220;become reliant on highly processed foods and coupled with a sedentary lifestyle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For years, Americans have been advised to limit saturated fat, and the new pyramid is facing criticism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very disappointed in the new pyramid that features red meat and saturated fat sources at the very top, as if that&#8217;s something to prioritize. It does go against decades and decades of evidence and research,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/profiles\/christopher-gardner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christopher Gardner<\/a>, a nutrition expert at Stanford University. He was a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/2025-advisory-committee-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee<\/a>, which reviewed all the nutrition evidence.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines also elevate cheese and other dairy to the top of the pyramid, paving the way for the option of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/09\/08\/nx-s1-5528747\/what-kind-of-dairy-does-a-body-good-science-is-updating-the-answer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">full-fat milk<\/a> and other dairy products in school meals.
