Every year marks the arrival of at least one indie horror filmmaker<\/a> who seemingly emerges from out of nowhere to become a household name. In 2026, that name just might be Ian Tuason, whose debut feature \u201cUndertone<\/a>\u201d earned him a distribution deal with A24 and a prime spring release date. The film<\/a> explores the dark side of supernatural podcasts, following a host who receives a series of suspicious recordings that suggest her skepticism about the occult could be misguided.<\/p>\n

\u201cUndertone\u201d premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival<\/a>, with A24 acquiring distribution rights soon after. It will next screen at the 2026 Sundance<\/a> Film Festival in the midnight section. Other films in the section include \u201cThe Best Summer,\u201d \u201cBuddy,\u201d \u201cLeviticus,\u201d \u201cMum, I\u2019m Alien Pregnant,\u201d \u201cRock Springs,\u201d and \u201cSaccharine.\u201d<\/p>\n

A synopsis of the film from the Sundance program reads: \u201cStrained by the responsibility of providing end-of-life care to her dying mother, Evy (Nina Kiri) seeks respite from the loneliness of her fragmented reality. Now living in a house full of sentimental keepsakes and memories, her sanity and structure lies within her work on a supernatural podcast, \u2018The Undertone.\u2019 While she usually plays skeptic to the creepy (and often disturbing) audio files sent to her by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) for podcast fodder, the latest submission hits differently. A series of 10 unheard recordings from a young pregnant couple are unfurled one by one, each more ominous than the last. As Evy draws parallels to her current plight, hidden messages manifest, pushing her further toward madness.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film, which is written and directed by Tuason, stars Nina Kiri, Adam DiMarco, Mich\u00e8le Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidas, and Jeff Yung. Dan Slater and Cody Calahan serve as producers.<\/p>\n

Regardless of how \u201cUndertone\u201d performs, it appears that the film industry is already bullish on Tuason. He was announced in December<\/a> as the director of a new \u201cParanormal Activity\u201d reboot being produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster for Paramount. His film will mark the eighth entry in the long-running found footage series.<\/p>\n

A24 is set to release \u201cUndertone\u201d in theaters on Friday, March 13.
