It\u2019s the week of circling back on those emails to sources you sent in December, and soon Google may determine whether you get a reply.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Google announced<\/a> that it\u2019ll start testing out a new AI Inbox tab, which will analyze the contents of a user\u2019s emails, summarize them, and suggest action items. The AI Inbox is only available to \u201ctrusted testers\u201d right now, but will be \u201cmore broadly available in the coming months,\u201d according to the announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI Inbox is like having a personalized briefing, highlighting to-dos and catching you up on what matters,\u201d Gmail\u2019s vice president of product Blake Barnes<\/a> writes. \u201cIt helps you prioritize, identifying your VIPs based on signals like people you email frequently, those in your contacts list and relationships it can infer from message content.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sample in the announcement greets the user \u201cSusan\u201d by suggesting three action items and five topics to catch up on, all based on emails in Susan\u2019s inbox. The suggestions include rescheduling a dentist appointment, replying to a kid\u2019s coach, and paying a bill.<\/p>\n

Barnes told<\/a> Wired that users\u2019 emails won\u2019t be used as training data for Gemini and that they can opt out of the feature when it becomes available to the public.<\/p>\n

The blog post makes no mention of how the AI Inbox will handle, filter, or prioritize newsletters \u2014 a staple in news outlets\u2019 distribution and audience engagement strategies and the lifeblood for independent journalists and writers. It also remains to be seen how news alerts will be presented in the AI Inbox and how Gemini will frame<\/a> them.<\/p>\n

Wired\u2019s Reece Rogers noted<\/a> the first iteration of AI Inbox was not exactly a smashing success.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the continued spread of generative AI features, the\u00a0underlying reliability<\/a> of these tools remains iffy,\u201d Rogers writes. \u201cBack in 2023, when Google\u2019s chatbot was still called \u2018Bard,\u2019 I tested the company\u2019s nascent Gmail extension<\/a> that tried to summarize my messages and search through the inbox for insights. At the time, this extension was a complete bust, with a bevy of incorrect responses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Google is starting to test a potentially radical reinvention of Gmail \u2014 a new \u201cAI Inbox\u201d that\u2019s essentially Search\u2019s AI Mode but for your Inbox.<\/p>\n
