Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Guillermo del Toro<\/a>, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/a> and Josh Safdie have been nominated for the Directors Guild\u2019s top prize. The organization announced feature film and first-time director nominees Thursday for the 78th annual Directors Guild Awards.<\/p>\n

The five films singled out for the top prize, \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d \u201cSinners,\u201d \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d \u201cHamnet\u201d and \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d exactly mirrored Wednesday\u2019s ensemble Actor Award nominees<\/a>, further narrowing the field of this season\u2019s top contenders days before the Golden Globe Awards.<\/a><\/p>\n

Directors Guild nominees often closely align with those of the Academy Awards. Over the past two decades, the winner of the DGA award has almost always also triumphed at the Oscars, including last year when Sean Baker won<\/a> for \u201cAnora.\u201d Oscar nominations are still a few weeks away, however, set for Jan. 22. <\/p>\n

Both Zhao and del Toro have won the award before, for \u201cNomadland\u201d and \u201cThe Shape of Water.\u201d It\u2019s the first time Safdie and Coogler have been nominated for the prize. Although Anderson, previously nominated for \u201cThere Will Be Blood\u201d and \u201cLicorice Pizza,\u201d is seemingly the front-runner, if Coogler wins it would be a first for a Black filmmaker.<\/p>\n

Directors nominated for first features include Eva Victor for \u201cSorry, Baby,\u201d<\/a>Alex Russell for \u201cLurker,\u201d<\/a> Charlie Pollinger for \u201cThe Plague,\u201d Harry Lighton for \u201cPillion\u201d and Hasan Hadi for \u201cThe President\u2019s Cake.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the guild also announced documentary filmmaker nominations, including Mstyslav Chernov for \u201c2000 Meters to Andriivka,\u201d<\/a> a co-production between The Associated Press and PBS Frontline, Geeta Gandbhir for \u201cThe Perfect Neighbor,\u201d Sara Khaki and Mohammadreza Eyni for \u201cCutting Through the Rocks,\u201d Elizabeth Lo for \u201cMistress Dispeller\u201d and Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus for \u201cCover-Up.\u201d<\/p>\n

DGA President Christopher Nolan congratulated the nominees on behalf of the guild community and, in a statement, said, \u201cWe could not be prouder to recognize the incredible work of this year\u2019s nominees for their dedication to the art of filmmaking.\u201d<\/p>\n
