{"id":228742,"date":"2026-01-09T07:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T07:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/228742\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T07:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T07:57:10","slug":"tasmanian-government-committed-to-stamping-out-antisemitic-violence-and-hatred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/228742\/","title":{"rendered":"Tasmanian Government committed to stamping out antisemitic violence and hatred"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                            9 January 2026&#13;\n                    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                            Guy Barnett,&#13;<br \/>\n                        &#13;<br \/>\n                            Attorney-General&#13;\n                    <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                            Felix Ellis,&#13;<br \/>\n                        &#13;<br \/>\n            &#13;<br \/>\n                            Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management&#13;\n                    <\/p>\n<p>In response to the tragic Bondi terror attacks, a Joint Meeting of Police Ministers Council and the Standing Council of Attorneys-General has been held to discuss proposed changes to firearms laws and the response to antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, and Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, were in attendance on behalf of the Tasmanian Government.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said the Tasmanian Government welcomes the progress made at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, we strongly endorse a focus on preventing and responding to antisemitism, its causes in Australia, and the responses required in the wake of the Bondi terror attacks,\u201d the Attorney said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe firmly support and welcome the calling of the Royal Commission by the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Premier wrote to Prime Minister Albanese expressing our strong support for a Royal Commission on behalf of the Tasmanian Government, and we stand ready to assist in any way required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of discussions on how states would work to combat antisemitism, Tasmanian Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, provided an update on Tasmania\u2019s laws to combat hatred, including the recently passed Sentencing Amendment (Aggravating Factors) Bill 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to consider any other reforms targeted at preventing and responding to antisemitic hatred, noting Tasmania already has strong anti-discrimination laws which prevent discrimination and the incitement of hatred on the basis of race, religious belief or religious activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At today\u2019s meeting, the Tasmanian Government noted that there is still significant and important detail to be shared by the Commonwealth in relation to their firearms proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis said\u00a0there\u00a0remains\u00a0significant\u00a0detail\u00a0to be shared by the Commonwealth\u00a0in relation to\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0firearms proposals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTasmania made it clear\u00a0we\u00a0will be consulting\u00a0with our community\u00a0in a methodical manner, rather than rushing through Federal Government\u00a0proposals,\u201d Minister Ellis said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u00a0is significant detail to be worked\u00a0through to\u00a0ensure legitimate firearms users are not unduly\u00a0impacted\u00a0and that the Commonwealth is appropriately contributing to the costs of\u00a0any changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must\u00a0ensure that there are\u00a0appropriate carve\u00a0outs for primary producers, sporting\u00a0shooters\u00a0and other legitimate firearms users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also have concerns\u00a0regarding\u00a0the funding of the Commonwealth\u2019s proposed\u00a0firearms\u00a0buyback.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur estimates show a buy-back could cost Tasmanians $20 million, and we believe the Commonwealth should foot the bill for this as occurred in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, our Government has endorsed\u00a0proposals\u00a0to ensure that firearms are kept out of the wrong hands, such as greater sharing of criminal intelligence from federal agencies to state authorities, and the consideration of options to accelerate the National Firearms Register.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#13;
