Hollywood\u2019s A-list will assemble this weekend for the 83rd Golden Globes<\/a> ceremony, a night that will reveal where this year\u2019s Oscars race is headed.<\/p>\n

Stars including Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a>, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Michael B Jordan and Ariana Grande are among those nominated for film awards while small screen nominees include Helen Mirren, Jenna Ortega, Jude Law and Glen Powell.<\/p>\n

Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s epic comedy thriller One Battle After Another<\/a> leads with nine nominations and is already looking like this season\u2019s frontrunner. It has been named best of the year by both New York and Los Angeles critics circles as well as the National Board of Review, the Gotham awards and at last week\u2019s Critics Choice awards.<\/p>\n

This week saw nominations announced for the Screen Actors Guild\u2019s recently renamed Actor awards with it also leading the field with seven nods.<\/p>\n

The film, which has an estimated budget of around $130m, tells the story of DiCaprio\u2019s ageing revolutionary grappling with his past coming back to haunt him. In his five-star review<\/a>, the Guardian\u2019s Peter Bradshaw called it \u201cexciting and baffling\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the best time I\u2019ve had making a movie and I feel like it shows,\u201d Anderson said on stage at the Critics Choice awards. \u201cIt\u2019s just a testament to being with people that you love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anderson has yet to win a Golden Globe or an Oscar for his previous work but is tipped to take home best director this Sunday.<\/p>\n

But while DiCaprio has been lauded with praise for his role, securing his 15th Golden Globe nomination, he\u2019s expected to miss out on a win. The award for best actor in a comedy or musical is likely to be taken home by Chalamet for his role in propulsive ping-pong caper Marty Supreme<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old actor, who has previously been nominated for roles including Wonka and Call Me By Your Name, has been front and centre for an all-out promotional blitz, aiding the film to $60m at the global box office in less than a month. It\u2019s already beat out Civil War to become A24\u2019s biggest film at the UK box office.<\/p>\n

Chalamet has been blunt about his desire to win an Oscar in his recent press tour, calling this his best performance to date.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can call me a try-hard, and they can say whatever the fuck,\u201d he said in a Vogue<\/a> interview. \u201cBut I\u2019m the one actually doing it here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some expected him to win last year for Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown but he was beaten by The Brutalist\u2019s Adrien Brody. While the Oscars have often chosen not to reward younger male actors (the last best actor winner under 40 was Eddie Redmayne in 2014), the Golden Globes have not had the same problem. Recent winners who did not go on to pick up Oscars include Austin Butler, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Taron Egerton and Andrew Garfield.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the only surer winner this weekend is Irish actor Jessie Buckley<\/a>, primed for her first Golden Globe for her role in Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s adaptation of Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s Hamnet, produced by Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes. She plays Shakespeare\u2019s grieving wife in a largely fictionalised version of the events surrounding the creation of Hamlet and the death of their son. Paul Mescal stars as the playwright.<\/p>\n

Buckley, 36, who originally rose to fame as a contestant on BBC reality competition show I\u2019d Do Anything before breaking out in acclaimed music drama Wild Rose, became a mother after filming Hamnet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo lose your child is such an unimaginable possibility that I can\u2019t fathom,\u201d she said in a recent interview<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing beyond how that must feel, and she went through all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardian\u2019s Peter Bradshaw praised Buckley\u2019s performance as \u201cunselfconsciously beguiling\u201d in a five-star review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Both Chalamet and Buckley won at last weekend\u2019s Critic Choice awards. Last year\u2019s Critics Choice lead acting winners Adren Brody and Demi Moore both also won Golden Globes.<\/p>\n

Hamnet is also considered a strong possibility in the best drama film category but that could be won by Ryan Coogler\u2019s genre-shifting blockbuster Sinners, which boasts seven nominations.<\/p>\n

The $368m smash hit could see star Michael B Jordan<\/a> become only the fourth Black actor to win in the category of best actor in a drama and Coogler become the first ever Black director to win.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest lesson for me, and it\u2019s gonna sound cheesy, but the biggest lesson is just how much I love my job,\u201d Coogler said to the Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cProfessionally I\u2019m married to cinema, and this movie felt like I was renewing my vows, if that makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Sinners<\/a> and One Battle After Another are Warner Bros films, the result of a bold auteur-led slate for the studio. As the year came to an end, news emerged that Netflix was in the running to take ownership. This season has seen some of the streamer\u2019s bigger awards hopes, from Jay Kelly to A House of Dynamite, fail to register with voters.<\/p>\n

The night will be hosted again by comedian Nikki Glaser who received praise for her turn last year. The often raucous standup, known for roasting celebrities, has already said that there is one star who she refused to ridicule.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying out my monologue around LA, at the clubs here, and just even any joke about Julia Roberts, they are not there for,\u201d she said in a CBS<\/a> interview. \u201cYou cannot make fun of America\u2019s sweetheart. So, whatever I end up saying about her, that is the most fine-tuned joke that I\u2019ve worked on so hard, because it is very delicate.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Oscar nominations will be revealed on 22 January.
