When Tron<\/a> hit theaters in 1982, it blew people away with its neon-lit, computer generated world. It didn’t take long for the film to earn a devoted following, spawning a franchise that’s since expanded into video games, comics, TV shows, and even theme park rides.\n<\/p>\n The story centers on Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges<\/a>) and later his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) as they get pulled into the Grid, a fully digital universe where programs have minds of their own and lightcycles zoom along through luminous tracks.\n<\/p>\n Now that all the Tron films are available to stream on Disney+, it’s a great time to jump into the Grid. Here’s how to watch the Tron movies in order.\n<\/p>\n Tron (1982) <\/p>\n Cindy Morgan and Bruce Boxleitner in ‘Tron’.<\/p>\n Disney<\/p>\n Tron set itself apart by looking like nothing else from its era. Directed by Steven Lisberger, the movie leans hard into CGI at a time when that was still considered risky and experimental. The neon colors, glowing suits, and digital worlds gave the film a futuristic vibe that helped push visual effects in a new direction.\n<\/p>\n The story kicks off in the real world with Kevin Flynn, a gifted programmer and video game designer who’s been shut out of his own success by ENCOM executive Ed Dillinger (David Warner), a man who runs the company through a powerful system called the Master Control Program (MCP).\u00a0\n<\/p>\n When attempting to expose the truth, Flynn reconnects with his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Lora Baines (Cindy Morgan<\/a>), and her new boyfriend Alan (Bruce Boxleitner). Their plan goes wrong, however, and Flynn is suddenly transported into ENCOM’s computer system. Now stranded, Flynn must navigate a world of sentient programs and take on the MCP from within.\n<\/p>\n Reactions were mixed upon Tron’s release, but audiences still showed up. The movie made over $33 million on a $17 million budget, which was solid for the time.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n Many critics weren’t sold on the movie, though. Entertainment Weekly praised<\/a> the lightcycle races and action but felt that “too much of the design is geometrically sterile\u2026 And the less said about dialogue like ‘They haven\u2019t built a circuit that could hold you,’ the better.”\n<\/p>\n Where to watch\u00a0Tron: Disney+<\/a>\n<\/p>\n Tron: Legacy (2010) <\/p>\n Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde in ‘Tron: Legacy’.<\/p>\n Disney<\/p>\n Tron gained a cult following as the decades passed, and Disney eventually decided it was worth giving the story another shot with Tron: Legacy<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n Released in 2010 and directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1 ), the sequel shifts focus to Sam, Kevin Flynn’s son. After receiving a strange signal from his father, Sam is pulled into the Grid, a virtual reality where he teams up with his dad and a program named Quorra (Olivia Wilde<\/a>) to stop Clu, a dangerous digital copy of Kevin, from escaping out into the real world.\n<\/p>\n Even with a huge marketing push, Tron: Legacy struggled to win over everyone. Critics were split, but financially, the movie did just fine, earning about $410 million on a $170 million budget.\n<\/p>\n On the film’s 10th anniversary, EW’s writer noted that<\/a> “Tron: Legacy has less of a legacy than the original film it worshipped.”\n<\/p>\n “I recall Legacy looking pretty nifty on a big IMAX screen, but a recent pandemic rewatch was absolute death, one flat scene after another shot on a digital backlot that looks like pre-vis for a car commercial,” they continued. “Legacy doesn’t even look as good as the original Tron, where the sweet silliness and beep-boop Wendy Carlos score gives all the floating-block action an endearingly fingerpainted quality.”\n<\/p>\n Where to watch\u00a0Tron: Legacy: Disney+<\/a>\n<\/p>\n Tron: Ares (2025) <\/p>\n Jared Leto in ‘Tron: Ares’.<\/p>\n Courtesy of Disney<\/p>\n Even though Tron never reached the popularity of other sci-fi franchises like Star Wars, Disney refuses to give up. The latest entry, Tron: Ares, hit theaters in October 2025, and honestly, it kind of came and went. The highlight of the rather lackluster film was definitely the score, thanks to Nine Inch Nails.\n<\/p>\n Jared Leto<\/a> takes the lead as Ares, a super advanced MCP who leaves the Grid to track down a code that could let programs exist in the real world. ENCOM CEO Eve Kim (Greta Lee) and Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters) are also after code. Julian wants Ares to help him turn AI into weapons, while Eve hopes it can solve global issues like hunger and energy shortages. In the end, Ares sides with Eve, which leads Julian to send another program, Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith), after them.\n<\/p>\n In an interview with EW<\/a>, director Joachim R\u00f8nning likened the movie to Pinocchio, but Lee suggested Bonnie and Clyde was a closer fit. “Ares, this program, and Eve, this human, are this extremely unlikely duo that are forced to join forces in a very unlikely way,” she explained.\n<\/p>\n Like the earlier films, Tron: Ares got a lukewarm reception. But this time, it ended up flopping at the box office. Bridges, who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, weighed in on the obsession with opening weekend numbers in a chat with EW<\/a>, saying, “It’s interesting, though, how movies are received at opening weekend. I remember Heaven’s Gate was considered, you know, very disappointing or a flop, but nowadays it’s considered kind of a masterpiece\u2026 So it’s interesting how things can grow on you.”\n<\/p>\n He added, “Even as an individual, often, I have not liked a movie.
