Italdesign Redesigns 2nd NSX to Resemble the 1st Italdesign <\/p>\n
The Ohio-built second-generation Acura (slash Honda) NSX<\/a> often felt like a car ahead of its time, with a hybrid system that combined the efforts of a twin-turbo V-6 and three electric motors essentially previewing the powertrain configuration of several more recent supercars. Despite that, it retired without any direct replacement<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now Italdesign has, with Honda\u2019s consent, created the NSX Tribute. This is a redesigned version of the car, unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan. The plan is to build a limited number of these, based on original cars, but\u2014sadly for U.S. buyers\u2014Italdesign says this \u201cstrictly limited series will be produced exclusively in right-hand drive,\u201d so presumably intended for Japanese buyers (where the NSX was sold as a Honda, not an Acura.)<\/p>\n Although built on the second NSX, many details have clearly been inspired by the first, including a new rear light graphic which mirrors the full-width bar of the original car and motorized \u201ceyelid\u201d covers over the headlights to replicate the pop-up units of the earliest NSX models. Italdesign\u2019s accompanying video also has the rendered car being driven by an unseen pilot who wears white socks and loafers, the same combination sported by Ayton Senna when he put the original car through its paces at the Japan\u2019s Suzuka circuit in a famous video<\/a>.<\/p>\n Timed to celebrate two significant anniversaries for Honda\u201460 years since its first Formula 1 race, 35 years since the first road car was launched, and 30 years since an NSX won its class at Le Mans\u2014the Tribute is heavily inspired by motorsport. Hence the \u201cChampionship White\u201d paintwork of one of the renderings, the race car-like Advan graphics on one of the others, and the fact the new car wears the red Honda badge normally reserved for Type R models<\/a>.<\/p>\n Images of the Tribute\u2019s interior are, again, just renderings, but they show the basic design of the second-generation car equipped with new color and trim, as well as what appears to be a new dashboard top and instrument binnacle.<\/p>\n One detail missing, for now, is a price, although the examples set by other high-end restomods suggests this will be considerable. The Tribute also faces a compelling alternative built with the collaboration of another famous Italian design house in JAS Motorsport\u2019s recently announced Tensei<\/a>, a reworked version of the original car featuring carbonfiber bodywork designed by Pininfarina.
