Amanda Seyfried appeared in one of the biggest movie-musicals of the 2000s (Mamma Mia!) and one of the biggest of the 2010s (Les Mis\u00e9rables). In the 2020s, at least so far, Seyfried\u2019s big musical is The Testament Of Ann Lee<\/a>, though as she tells The A.V. Club in a conversation about the movie, \u201cI\u2019m never not looking for a musical to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s an extra layer of expression in musicals, obviously, because you\u2019re singing and moving in a way that you aren\u2019t when you\u2019re just speaking to somebody,\u201d the Golden Globe nominee says of her affinity for the genre. \u201cAnd it enhances every experience as an actor and as the character that I\u2019m portraying. It just kind of lifts everything off the ground a little bit in a way that\u2019s very exciting to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

As The Testament Of Ann Lee<\/a> is about the founder of the Shaker religious movement in the 1700s, and the Shakers were vocal and movement-oriented, there was \u201cno choice but to include\u201d music in any depiction of the group. In that sense, the inclusion of the singing can feel more realistic than it does in a movie like, say, Mamma Mia!. \u201cIn Mamma Mia!, everything\u2019s pre-recorded, so I\u2019m not really singing so much as I am just, you know, lip-synching my own voice,\u201d says Seyfried. \u201cWith Ann Lee, it\u2019s both. I\u2019m in the studio, and I\u2019m singing live, and it\u2019s being mixed in post.\u201d This experience sounds like it changed the way Seyfried may approach another musical in the future. \u201cI just realized, like, I don\u2019t have to listen to myself anymore,\u201d she says. \u201cI just have to sing from my gut. I just have to sing from my own lived experience. And that sounds different, and it feels different, and you breathe differently, so you become a different animal in a way. And whatever was created while I was singing from that place of my own truth and molding that together with Ann Lee\u2019s truth\u2026 it was incredibly fulfilling and revolutionary for me.\u201d Hopefully she can put that to use in whatever the next musical is on her horizon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Testament Of Ann Lee is now playing in New York City and Los Angeles. It will expand to more cities on January 16 before opening wide on January 23.
