{"id":230518,"date":"2026-01-10T07:38:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T07:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/230518\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T07:38:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T07:38:07","slug":"sa-premier-denies-pressuring-adelaide-festival-to-drop-randa-abdel-fattah-peter-malinauskas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/230518\/","title":{"rendered":"SA premier denies pressuring Adelaide festival to drop Randa Abdel-Fattah | Peter Malinauskas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The South Australian premier has denied exerting pressure on the Adelaide festival board to disinvite Randa Abdel-Fattah as a speaker at Adelaide Writers\u2019 Week, while reiterating that he agreed with the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/jan\/08\/adelaide-writers-week-dumps-prominent-academic-randa-abdel-fattah-over-cultural-sensitivity-concerns-after-bondi-attack-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dumped the Palestinian Australian academic<\/a> as a speaker on Thursday, citing \u201ccultural sensitivity\u201d after the Bondi attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBy law, I as Premier am prevented from directing the Board,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/peter-malinauskas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Malinauskas<\/a> said. \u201cI support the intent of this legislation, and have made it clear at every juncture that I would not seek to direct the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHowever, when asked for my opinion I was happy to make it clear that the state government did not support the inclusion of Dr Abdel-Fattah on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/adelaide\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Adelaide<\/a> Writers\u2019 Week program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Saturday, 11 prominent cultural figures wrote to Malinauskas and the board demanding the reinstatement of Abdel-Fattah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The letter was drafted by Rob Brookman, who has held almost every major leadership role at the festival across three decades, including artistic director and executive director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 10 cosignatories, including Neil Armfield, Jo Dyer, Jim Sharman and Anthony Steel, have all previously held senior artistic or administrative positions at the festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The letter said the cancellation of Abdel-Fattah\u2019s participation was a grave mistake which had brought the festival and Writers\u2019 Week into disrepute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAn about-face may be embarrassing but it is both the right thing to do and will cauterise the growing damage to this much loved and internationally significant South Australian cultural institution,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTo revoke [Abdel-Fattah\u2019s] invitation inevitably and appallingly draws a direct link between her presence and the outrage of the Bondi massacre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWickedness thrives in darkness and prejudice thrives in ignorance born of silence. The open discussion of ideas, beliefs, facts and opinion is ultimately the pathway to community cohesion. Silencing and censorship are not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The letter also questioned why the board appeared to have abandoned its support for the director of Adelaide Writers\u2019 Week, Louise Adler, who is scheduled to deliver her fourth festival from 28 February to 4 March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2023 Adler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2023\/feb\/25\/adelaide-writers-week-withdrawals-sad-and-unfortunate-director-louise-adler-says\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defended the inclusion of several Palestinian speakers<\/a>, two of whom drew criticism for controversial comments made before the festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On the opening night that year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2023\/mar\/12\/adelaide-writers-week-rare-moments-of-empathy-and-nuance-found-amid-a-storm-of-controversy#:~:text=On%20AWW%E2%80%99s%20opening,of%20Putin%E2%80%99s%20%C2%ADRussia.%E2%80%9D\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Malinauskas said<\/a> he had been under immense pressure to axe the funding for Writers\u2019 Week, but decided it would set a dangerous precedent if a government determined who was allowed to speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhat path does that take us down?\u201d he said then. \u201cIt\u2019s a path to a future where politicians decide what is culturally appropriate \u2026 a path, in fact, that leads us into the territory of Putin\u2019s \u00adRussia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Saturday\u2019s letter said: \u201cThe festival board has previously been admirable in its support of the director\u2019s decisions in the face of vocal and well-organised opposition \u2026 the board\u2019s reversal of its principled support for the director and her program at this time is, in our view, antithetical to what the festival and writers week have and should stand for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The festival board and Adler were contacted for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The South Australian premier has denied exerting pressure on the Adelaide festival board to disinvite Randa Abdel-Fattah as&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":230519,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":{"0":"post-230518","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/230518","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=230518"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/230518\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/230519"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=230518"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=230518"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=230518"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
