Donald Trump told Iran\u2019s leaders to \u201cshow humanity\u201d in dealing with the mass demonstrations sweeping the country as he warned Tehran the US would take \u201cvery strong action\u201d if it started hanging protesters. <\/p>\n

The US president\u2019s comments on Tuesday came as he travelled from Detroit to Washington where he was due to meet top aides at the White House to continue discussions about a possible intervention in Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked what his message to Iran\u2019s leadership was, Trump said: \u201cThey\u2019ve got to show humanity. They\u2019ve got a big problem and I hope they\u2019re not going to be killing people.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks followed a day of escalating pressure<\/a> from Washington on Iran\u2019s regime, with Trump weighing military strikes on the country and calling on protesters to \u201ctake over your institutions\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Tuesday, the US president said America\u2019s next moves<\/a> would depend on whether Iran proceeded to execute protesters. \u201cIf they hang them, you\u2019re going to see some things,\u201d he told CBS. \u201cWe will take very strong action, if they do such a thing,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

The president\u2019s latest warnings to Iran come less than two weeks after he authorised a military operation in Venezuela to capture its strongman president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s push to actively support protesters in Iran, possibly with military strikes, would represent a far bolder and riskier move at unseating the leadership of one of America\u2019s strategic foes that would potentially upend the Middle East. <\/p>\n

Trump suggested US and Israeli air strikes last June had so weakened Iran that its capacity to retaliate against American interests in the region was limited. But he acknowledged US air strikes might not succeed in protecting Iranian protesters, who he vowed earlier this month to \u201crescue\u201d from regime violence.<\/p>\n

The president has also announced a 25 per cent tariff<\/a> on any country doing business with Iran, which could include more than 100 nations. But he has not signed an order to implement the policy.<\/p>\n

When asked if he was seeking democracy for Iran, Trump said: \u201cIdeally, you\u2019d like to see it, but what we want to see is we don\u2019t want to see people killed and we want to see a little bit of freedom for these people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several thousand protesters have been killed since the demonstrations broke out<\/a> across Iran in late December \u2014 one western official said the death toll ranged between 4,000 and 5,000 people.<\/p>\n

Trump on Tuesday said he was looking to \u201cget some accurate numbers as to what\u2019s happening with regard to the killing. The killing looks like it\u2019s significant, but we don\u2019t know yet for certain,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Trump earlier on Tuesday urged Iranian protesters via his Truth Social platform to \u201cKEEP PROTESTING\u201d and \u201cTAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!\u201d <\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s UN mission called the message a \u201creckless statement explicitly encourages political destabilisation and invites violence\u201d, as it blamed the US and Israel for the civilian deaths in the Islamic republic. <\/p>\n

The mission added in a social media post that \u201cUS fantasies and policy towards Iran are rooted in regime change\u201d and Washington was manufacturing \u201ca pretext for military intervention\u201d.<\/p>\n

During his speech on the economy in Michigan on Tuesday, Trump mentioned the failed US hostage rescue mission to Iran in 1980, in which eight US service members died.<\/p>\n

That operation was \u201ca disaster for Jimmy Carter\u201d, Trump said of the late president. But he suggested his administration would not suffer that kind of mistake and he would not rule out the deployment of US forces in Iran again. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey had all sorts of problems,\u201d he said of the 1980 mission. \u201cIt was the exact opposite of Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Trump travelled to Michigan, JD Vance, vice-president, had chaired a meeting of top national security officials.<\/p>\n

Although a diplomatic solution to the stand-off between the US and Iran remains possible, Trump said on social media on Tuesday that he had scrapped all meetings with Tehran\u2019s officials until the \u201csenseless killing of protesters\u201d ended. <\/p>\n
