Photo: Alameda police\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">ALAMEDA, Calif. &#8211; Former tenants left a massive lizard, called an ornate Niles monitor, behind in their home, Alameda <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AlamedaPD\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">police announced on Monday.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Police dispatchers were called about it, and they, in turn, called animal control, police said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The lizard was large and aggressive, but police said they were able to devise a plan to get the reptile safely to the East Bay Vivarium.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The lizards, which can often be confused with Komodo dragons, have powerful bites, strong claws, and forceful tails that can cause injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Police said that Ornate monitors, native to West and Middle Africa, are not suitable for beginner reptile keepers and are never appropriate pets for children.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Police posted photos of the lizard, who was seen climbing up a window on Venetian blinds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Alameda police did not state if they were going to track down the former tenants, who left the lizard behind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/615148994_1204456058487195_4448082475700374068_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">Tenants left behind a 7-foot ornate Nile monitor, a type of lizard, in an abandoned Alameda home.
