\n\tCan \u201c28 Years Later: The Bone Temple<\/a>\u201d claw to the top of the domestic box office, or will James Cameron\u2019s \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d rule for the fifth consecutive weekend?<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Bone Temple,\u201d the fourth installment in Sony\u2019s dystopian \u201c28 Days Later\u201d franchise, is aiming for $20 million to $22 million in its four-day domestic debut over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The film arrives about six months after its predecessor, \u201c28 Years Later,\u201d which opened last June to $30 million over the traditional three-day weekend. \u201c28 Years Later\u201d ended its run with a tidy $70 million in North America and $150 million globally against a $60 million budget. This zombie sequel carries a slightly higher $63 million price tag. <\/p>\n

\n\tDirected by Nia DaCosta and written by series creator Alex Garland, \u201cThe Bone Temple\u201d takes place after the previous film and brings back Ralph Fiennes, Jack O\u2019Connell and Alfie Williams as they continue to grapple with a Rage Virus that\u2019s ravaging a post-apocalyptic Britain. The film could benefit from a dearth of competition as well as positive reviews. \u201c28 Years Later: The Bone Temple\u201d currently holds a 94% Rotten Tomatoes average, with Variety\u2019s chief film critic Peter Debruge<\/a> writing that \u201cit\u2019s bold, mind-bending work which satisfies that so-often-frustrated craving for a zombie movie with brains.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tElsewhere, Chloe Zhao\u2019s Shakespearean tragedy \u201cHamnet\u201d is expanding to 688 theaters after several weekends in limited release. The film, which just won the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama as well as a best actress trophy for star Jessie Buckley, has earned an impressive $13 million domestically during its platform rollout. <\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile the reigning box office champ \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d is looking to add $12 million to $14 million over the four-day frame. Although a theatrical juggernaut with $1.23 billion globally, the third \u201cAvatar\u201d is running out of steam faster than its predecessors. To wit, the first two films were No. 1 at the box office for seven consecutive weekends, while the domination of \u201cFire and Ash\u201d might end after five. Of course, Hollywood\u2019s expectations for \u201cAvatar 3\u201d are stratospheric because the prior films, 2009\u2019s \u201cAvatar\u201d and 2022\u2019s \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water,\u201d stand as two of the biggest movies in history with $2.9 billion and $2.3 billion, respectively. (The director has joked that after assessing the financial results of the third installment, he\u2019ll hold a press conference<\/a>\u00a0to determine whether he\u2019ll proceed with \u201cAvatar 4\u201d and \u201cAvatar 5.\u201d) <\/p>\n

\n\tJanuary tends to be slower for movie theaters, at least compared to the summer months and holiday season. Hollywood has set a few potential hits in the first month of the year, however, including Amazon MGM\u2019s sci-fi adventure \u201cMercy\u201d with Chris Pratt, Sam Raimi\u2019s survival horror film \u201cSend Help\u201d and the Jason Statham-led \u201cShelter.\u201d<\/p>\n
