These were parts of the country Avedon, a native New Yorker, had never set foot in before. Typically, he was more familiar with the company of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn \u2014 subjects for his numerous fashion shoots and celebrity portraits. Now Avedon was driving through America\u2019s wide-open roads, visiting country fairs, rodeos and slaughter houses, often pulling the wagon over whenever he found an interesting face.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000f3b6rq12hqrse@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It took him five years, and over one thousand sittings, to complete his mission. The resulting photography series, \u201cIn the American West,\u201d catalogs miners, drifters, dryland farmers, prisoners, undocumented migrants, truckers, factory workers and meat packers in 126 freckled and mud-splattered portraits. Avedon\u2019s ode to America\u2019s forgotten workforce first went on view at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas in 1985. \u201cThose images were so powerful,\u201d said photographer Constance Jaeggi, whose 2025 series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/13\/style\/escaramuza-cowgirl-fashion-photography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cEscaramuza\u201d<\/a> visited many of the same parts of the US that Avedon did. \u201cEspecially coming from Switzerland and having a more romanticized vision of the American West\u2026 Those photos were such a contrast with that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000g3b6rj44e44rp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, four decades later, a unique selection of the original images are on display again \u2014 this time at the Gagosian gallery in London. Curated by Avedon\u2019s granddaughter, Caroline Avedon, who has been an archivist at The Avedon Foundation since 2021, the show marks her first solo project. At 26 years old, Avedon has set out to make the much-lauded photography series feel accessible to her generation. \u201cI\u2019m technically Gen Z,\u201d she said, standing in the middle of the whitewashed space. \u201cI wanted to give younger people an opportunity to possibly connect with the subjects.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/avedo-1979-unidentified-migrant-worker-eagle-pass.jpg\" alt=\"Unidentified migrant worker, Eagle Pass, Texas, December 10, 1979.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2160\" width=\"1739\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/freida-kleinsasser-hutterite-colony-harlowton-montana-june-23-1983.jpg\" alt=\"Freida Kleinsasser, thirteen year old, Hutterite colony, Harlowton, Montana, June 23, 1983.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2048\" width=\"1640\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000h3b6rmol762i4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead of just spotlighting portraits that are art-world favorites, such as \u201cbee man\u201d Ronald Fischer (which she remembers scaring her as a child), Avedon chose to shift emphasis onto the kids, teenagers and young adults that the photographer \u2014 who she regularly slips into calling \u201cgrandpa\u201d \u2014 captured. She hopes the picture of Teresa Waldron, a fresh-faced fourteen-year old wife with a willful stare, or Tracey Featherston, a young smokey-eyed motel maid from Dixon, California, for example, might bridge the gap of professional or geographical differences for a new audience. \u201cHuman connection is found no matter what,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000i3b6rkuwlegw8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But when Avedon\u2019s series first debuted, the work was criticized by some as exploitative. Questions centered on whether Avedon\u2019s use of a stark white background stripped these real people of their deserved context, and flattened them into objects or characters to be consumed by the elite. \u201cWho would not look alienated, who would not look dispossessed when asked to stand rootless against a seamless white paper?\u201d read an essay in the Journal of the Southern Regional Council in <a href=\"https:\/\/southernchanges.digitalscholarship.emory.edu\/sc09-5_001\/sc09-5_009\/#gsc.tab=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">1987<\/a>. But supporters argue that Avedon\u2019s style didn\u2019t interfere with what was essentially important documentary photography \u2014 and platformed a cross-section of people rarely seen. \u201cPerhaps there was a certain reality in them that people didn\u2019t want to be confronted with,\u201d said Jaeggi, who lives between Colorado and Texas. \u201cI look at those portraits and I think that not much has changed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/avedo-1983-robert-dixon-meat-packer-aurora.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Dixon, meat packer, Aurora, Colorado, June 15, 1983.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2160\" width=\"1739\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/avedo-1983-charlene-van-tighem-physical-therapist-augusta-montana.jpg\" alt=\"Charlene Van Tighem, physical therapist, Augusta, Montana, June 26, 1983.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2160\" width=\"1736\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000j3b6r3zf4qta0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The economic and political overtones of the portraits feel as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/22\/us\/america-poverty-un-report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relevant<\/a> today as ever. The late Jimmy Carter sat in the Oval Office when Avedon first began his journey out west, but just a year into the project the country had been turned on its head by a surprise presidential victory from Ronald Reagan. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/01\/08\/politics\/war-on-poverty-50-years\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">However, as poverty worsened<\/a>, it soon became clear that regardless whether it was a Democrat or Republican in the White House, the lower working class communities of the American West would continue to be sidelined in the national conversation. Speaking at the exhibition preview, Caroline Avedon called the show \u201cincredibly important,\u201d echoing Jaeggi in that little progress seems to have been made in terms of how the US treats its industrial workforce. \u201cWe overlook the people behind the scenes that are keeping America going,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/102-joe-dobosz-uranium-miner-church-rock-new-mexico-june-13-1979.jpg\" alt=\"Joe Dobosz, uranium miner, Church Rock, New Mexico, June 13, 1979.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2160\" width=\"1739\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000k3b6r1t50y2u5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the most striking photographs in the show is that of B.J. Van Fleet \u2014 a cherubic nine-year-old boy holding a shotgun with unsettling ease. Caroline Avedon feels a particular affection towards Fleet, who she calls \u201cone of her children\u201d (even though today the young boy would be pushing 50). In fact, Avedon feels so deeply attached to her grandfather\u2019s subjects that she regularly tries to find them on the internet. \u201cA lot of the work that these people were doing was incredibly dangerous,\u201d she said. \u201cSo a lot of them have unfortunately passed.\u201d But she is pleased to report that \u201cFleet is alive and well,\u201d and that she has also exchanged messages with the descendants of Richard Wheatcroft \u2014 a young rancher Avedon developed a personal relationship with after photographing him numerous times. (Two portraits of Wheatcroft shot two years apart appear as a diptych in the second room of the exhibition).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkdyv408000l3b6rpfnj20ql@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Recently, Avedon tried to find Freida Kleinsasser \u2014 a young Hutterite woman her grandfather photographed in 1983. The image, on show in London, looks more like a Steven Meisel Vogue editorial shoot as Kleinsasser stares down the lens in a chintz-patterned high-necked dress and a polka dot headscarf.
