{"id":238808,"date":"2026-01-15T05:07:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T05:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/238808\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T05:07:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T05:07:08","slug":"exercise-is-emerging-as-a-powerful-treatment-for-depression-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/238808\/","title":{"rendered":"Exercise Is Emerging as a Powerful Treatment For Depression : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Using exercise to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/vagus-nerve-stimulation-has-lasting-effects-in-people-with-severe-depression\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">treat depression<\/a> can be as effective as therapy or antidepressants, according to a new review of previous trials, potentially offering an affordable and personalized approach to improving mental health.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by researchers from the University of Lancashire in the UK analyzed 73 randomized, controlled trials involving a total of almost 5,000 adults. The studies covered a variety of different exercise regimes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ketamine-can-treat-depression-as-effectively-as-electroconvulsive-therapy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">depression treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the data showed that exercise can work as a way of easing the symptoms of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/depression\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73097\" data-postid=\"188383\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">depression<\/a>, in line with findings from some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-single-30-minute-exercise-session-has-an-immediate-antidepressant-effect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous investigations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-link-gut-bacteria-to-bipolar-depression-in-mouse-study\" style=\"--tw-scale-x: 1; --tw-scale-y: 1; --tw-scroll-snap-strictness: proximity; --tw-ring-offset-width: 0px; --tw-ring-offset-color: #fff; --tw-ring-color: #3b82f680; --tw-ring-offset-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-ring-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow: 0 0 #0000; --tw-shadow-colored: 0 0 #0000;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Link Gut Bacteria to Bipolar Depression in Mouse Study<\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, results vary to some extent between individuals and between exercise types.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings suggest that exercise appears to be a safe and accessible option for helping to manage symptoms of depression,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/about-us\/news\/exercise-treat-depression-yields-similar-results-therapy-and-antidepressants\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Andrew Clegg, a professor of Health Services Research at the University of Lancashire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This suggests that exercise works well for some people, but not for everyone, and finding approaches that individuals are willing and able to maintain is important.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WomanExercising.jpg\" alt=\"Woman exercising\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" class=\"wp-image-188386 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It remains to be seen if some types of exercise work better than others at tackling depression. (<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/woman-in-green-tank-top-and-black-leggings-doing-yoga-on-blue-round-trampoline-YxCrQm9XNgg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gabin Vallet\/Unsplash<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Across all of the trials, exercise was shown to be moderately beneficial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/these-2-key-lifestyle-changes-can-treat-mild-depression-as-well-as-therapy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for treating depression<\/a>, compared to no treatment at all. It was about on a par with psychological therapy, and (with a lesser degree of certainty) antidepressants.<\/p>\n<p>Light to moderate exercise seemed to work better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/study-finds-potential-downside-to-vigorous-exercise-that-we-didnt-know-about\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more vigorous activity<\/a> when it came to alleviating symptoms of depression, the review found. Between 13 and 36 sessions appeared to be the sweet spot, though none of the trials tracked depression and exercise over a long period.<\/p>\n<p>There was some evidence favoring the combination of different types of exercise, though no single activity type stood out as a clear winner. For exercise to provide benefits, it would need to be tailored to suit individual needs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For people with depression, the evidence indicates that exercise may offer similar short-term benefits to therapy or medication for some,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemediacentre.org\/expert-reaction-to-exercise-having-similar-results-as-therapy-for-treating-depression\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> neuroscientist Brendon Stubbs, from King&#8217;s College London, who wasn&#8217;t involved in the research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Decisions on switching or combining approaches should be made collaboratively with healthcare providers, considering individual circumstances.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The review focused mainly on structured trials, and while this is beneficial in terms of the comprehensiveness of the data that gets collected, these types of experiments tend to attract people who are naturally more motivated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/one-fitness-accessory-makes-you-up-to-7-times-more-likely-to-stay-active\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and active<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/LonelyMan-642x361.jpg\" alt=\"Lonely man\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188384\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Exercise works well for some people, but not for everyone.
