As the MCU prepares for yet another end with Avengers: Doomsday<\/a>, it\u2019s as good a time as any to look back on how this phase of its life began. Unlike its predecessor, the Infinity Saga, the Multiverse Saga began not on the big screen but on the small, with three TV shows dropping in 2021 before the films kicked up in earnest with Black Widow that summer. Unlike the Netflix shows and adjacent series like Runaways\u00a0and\u00a0Agents of SHIELD that preceded it, these new series could fully affirm their connection to the MCU anytime they wanted to, with the first handful of shows working as mini-sequels to Avengers: Endgame.<\/p>\n

Our first foray into this multi-medium venture was\u00a0WandaVision<\/a>,\u00a0which premiered January 15, 2021, and centered on Wanda Maximoff grieving the death of her boyfriend, Vision, who died in Infinity War. Marvel couldn\u2019t have picked a better show to kick off this new experiment; WandaVision was flooded with acclaim and did the impossible in making its titular duo<\/a> feel compelling on a week-to-week basis.<\/p>\n

It probably didn\u2019t hurt that after 2020 was completely MCU-free, this was allowed to be as much of a refresh for the audience as it was for Wanda and Vision themselves. Over that eight-week run, people laughed, they loved<\/a>, they had their theories<\/a>, they embraced Wanda\u2019s love for ViShawn<\/a>, and the show\u2019s quotes<\/a> became their new personality for a portion of the year.<\/p>\n

Despite its finale,<\/a> whose last moments openly undermined what came before<\/a>, WandaVision\u00a0might\u2019ve done its job a bit\u00a0too\u00a0well. The shows that followed haven\u2019t quite hit the same highs with critics, audiences, or both. That\u2019s not to call Marvel\u2019s TV output a complete debacle; shows like Ms. Marvel\u00a0and\u00a0Loki\u00a0were fairly well-regarded, at least up until the point they were made to set up a movie that\u2019s a year or more away. But it could be argued a pivot to TV hasn\u2019t done the MCU any favors: if you thought catching up on the movies felt like homework, then catching up on TV must feel like double that, especially for the shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Secret Invasion<\/a> that felt made in part to tee up future plot events that ultimately didn\u2019t go anywhere.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve covered the Multiverse Saga\u2019s various problems<\/a> time and again in the past five years<\/a>, and one of its more understated ones is the release structure. Many of these shows and movies just didn\u2019t come out in the right format: shows like Falcon or Moon Knight<\/a> would likely have played better as films, while features like Eternals<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Captain America: Brave New World<\/a>\u00a0might\u2019ve been better served on the small screen. At least part of the problem early on was Marvel not wanting to make actual TV shows<\/a>, something it didn\u2019t want to address until it basically had to with She-Hulk\u00a0and giving Daredevil: Born Again a creative refresh. Had Marvel not come clean with its flaws, it\u2019s possible Born Again would\u2019ve ended as a standalone run instead of getting a second and third installment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This just applies to live-action, of course; save for Marvel Zombies, the animated series (including What If\u2026? and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man) haven\u2019t pretended like they don\u2019t know the landscape they\u2019re in. It may only be happening on one side of the medium, but that doesn\u2019t make it any less frustrating, particularly when some of Marvel\u2019s strongest output in its multimedia history comes from animation. (Seriously, think about how good a character like Black Panther<\/a> or Iron Fist would be in animation and without being shackled to this franchise or the multiverse.) Marvel being afraid to embrace the medium it wanted to dominate isn\u2019t an isolated problem, and it\u2019s something the larger industry has gradually tried to reckon with in recent years. So many of these shows were made in the shadow of prestige TV, and that likely won\u2019t change anytime soon.<\/p>\n

But with future projects like Nova, Strange Academy,\u00a0<\/a>or even the return of\u00a0<\/a>Jessica Jones<\/a>,\u00a0it\u2019ll be interesting to see how (or if) those take after current mainstream darlings. (Consider HBO medical drama The Pitt<\/a>, which is first and foremost a show of the 2020s made like a show of the \u201990s that delivers competency porn<\/a> on a weekly and award-winning basis.) Because of its rocky start, the MCU\u2019s television enterprise is now in a position where it has to meet the medium where it\u2019s at and play by TV\u2019s rules rather than setting its own and getting everyone else to fall in line.<\/p>\n
