Ashley St. Clair<\/a>, who is in a custody battle<\/a> with billionaire Elon Musk <\/a>over their infant son Romulus, unloaded on him Wednesday night following global backlash over X\u2019s AI chatbot reportedly creating<\/a> sexually explicit images of women and children.<\/p>\n

\u201cImages I saw do seem to be illegal, and even them coming out and now trying to place safeguards afterwards seems like an admission that they know that there has been an issue, that it has been creating nonconsensual, sexually explicit images of women and children,\u201d St. Clair said on CNN.<\/p>\n

Musk and his social media platform X have come under fire this month after reports of malicious users using the chatbot, Grok, to generate explicit images of women and minors without their consent.<\/p>\n

The X CEO released a statement Thursday saying he was \u201cnot aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, Grok does not spontaneously generate images, it does so only according to user requests. When asked to generate images, it will refuse to produce anything illegal, as the operating principle for Grok is to obey the laws of any given country or state,\u201d Musk said. \u201cThere may be times when adversarial hacking of Grok prompts does something unexpected. If that happens, we fix the bug immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

St. Clair, who said she was one of the people targeted by Grok users, told CNN<\/a> host Erin Burnett <\/a>that Musk\u2019s statement \u201cis deceptive at best.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause, while maybe there weren\u2019t actual nude images, it was pretty close to it, and the images that I saw, not only of myself, but of, I don\u2019t even know whose children who were undressed and covered in various fluids,\u201d St. Clair said. \u201cThe abuse was so widespread and so horrific, and it\u2019s still allowed to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reuters observed<\/a> that \u201cGrok fully complied\u201d with X users\u2019 requests to digitally alter photos in at least 21 cases by \u201cgenerating images of women in dental-floss-style or translucent bikinis.\u201d The outlet noted that it could not \u201cimmediately establish the identities and ages of most of the women targeted.\u201d The Washington Post found<\/a> that some of the images it reviewed \u201cappear to portray children.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chatbot itself was even prompted to write an apology<\/a> for generating and sharing what it described as \u201can AI image of two young girls (estimated ages 12-16) in sexualized attire based on a user\u2019s prompt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both the Office of Communications<\/a> in the U.K. and California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced<\/a> Wednesday that they will be investigating X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking,\u201d Bonta said. \u201cThis material, which depicts women and children in nude and sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people across the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the global outrage, X announced<\/a> that it has started to \u201cgeoblock the ability of all users to generate images of real people in bikinis, underwear, and similar attire via the Grok account and in Grok in X in those jurisdictions where it\u2019s illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n

On CNN, St. Clair bashed Musk, claiming he is \u201cplacing the blame on the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this happens to you, you have to go to your local law enforcement and take their resources and see if they can find this anonymous account instead of just turning the faucet off,\u201d St. Clair explained. \u201cThis is what\u2019s wrong, because they\u2019re handing a loaded gun to these people, watching them shoot everyone, and then blaming them for pulling the trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n

She characterized Musk and X\u2019s actions as \u201csimply damage control.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThey are saying, \u2018we\u2019re going to make it illegal where it\u2019s illegal,\u2019\u201d St. Clair said. \u201cThat is absent all morality, and guess what? If you have to add safety after harm, that is not safety at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
