{"id":240374,"date":"2026-01-16T00:54:37","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T00:54:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/240374\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T00:54:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T00:54:37","slug":"josh-canham-extends-contract-with-australian-rugby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/240374\/","title":{"rendered":"Josh Canham extends contract with Australian Rugby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-2425b0\">Rugby Australia and the Queensland Reds are pleased to confirm Josh Canham has signed a contract extension through to the end of 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">Already signed for next year, Canham\u2019s extension has seen him re-commit to Australian Rugby until at least the home Rugby World Cup in just under two years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">Born in the USA, Canham grew up in Melbourne, playing his first Rugby for the Harlequin Junior Rugby Club \u2013 the same junior club as fellow Wallabies Rob Valetini and Hunter Paisami.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">He continued to develop in the Victorian Rugby system and was selected for the Australia Under 20s in 2021, before making his Super Rugby debut for the Melbourne Rebels in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">The lock went on to play 34 matches for the club, before shifting to the Queensland Reds at the end of 2024 \u2013 playing his first game for the Brisbane-based club against Wales in July of that year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">With a towering 202cm, 118kg frame, Canham was first selected in a Wallabies squad during the 2024 Rugby Championship and became Wallaby number 987 when he debuted against Argentina in Santa Fe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">A strong 2025 Super Rugby Pacific campaign, where he featured 14 times for the Reds, saw the 24-year-old named in the Wallabies\u2019 squad for the British &amp; Irish Lions Series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">Wallaby number 987 and Queensland Reds lock, Josh Canham said: \u201cThe professionalism of the coaches at the Reds, the facilities, a very exciting playing group and an exciting style of footy, I like playing, make the Reds the place I want to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">\u201cBeing in that Wallabies environment every day on tour enabled me to work on individual skills and understand the ins-and-outs of how the Wallabies go about things. I\u2019m definitely going to be pushing for more consistent opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">\u201cThere is a lot of opportunity in Australian rugby over these next few years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">Rugby Australia\u2019s Director of High Performance, Peter Horne said: \u201cJosh is an emerging young player who has had some Test experience and has a bright future ahead of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to continuing to support him in Australian Rugby and seeing him work hard to further develop his game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-2425b0\">Queensland Reds coach Les Kiss said: \u201cIt\u2019s fantastic that Josh has extended.
