{"id":241280,"date":"2026-01-16T13:00:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T13:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/241280\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T13:00:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T13:00:09","slug":"superagers-have-at-least-two-key-genetic-advantages-study-reveals-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/241280\/","title":{"rendered":"Superagers Have at Least Two Key Genetic Advantages, Study Reveals : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A massive study of more than 18,000 people has revealed that &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2025\/08\/12\/what-makes-a-superager\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SuperAgers<\/a>&#8221; \u2013 people unusually resistant to dementia in older age \u2013 have at least two key genetic advantages.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is this population of adults aged 80+ much less likely to carry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/just-one-gene-may-be-responsible-for-over-90-of-alzheimers-cases\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a gene variant that&#8217;s associated with higher Alzheimer&#8217;s risk<\/a>, but they&#8217;re also more likely to carry one associated with lower risk.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a result that shows that, while genes are far from the only factor at play, exceptional memory in old age is at least partly written into the superager genome.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was our most striking finding,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1112882\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says neuropsychologist Leslie Gaynor<\/a> of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the US.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although all adults who reach the age of 80 without receiving a diagnosis of clinical dementia exhibit exceptional aging, our study suggests that the superager phenotype can be used to identify a particularly exceptional group of oldest-old adults with a reduced genetic risk for  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"189217\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/blood-of-exceptionally-long-lived-people-reveals-crucial-differences\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blood of Exceptionally Long-Lived People Reveals Crucial Differences<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768568408_92_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Superagers are a population whose memories can best be described as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/gps.6034\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exceptional among their demographic<\/a>, rivalling those of people <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1017\/S1041610224000024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">decades younger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn&#8217;t just manifest as cognitive sharpness. Superagers also appear far less likely to develop dementia than the general population. Scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1001\/jama.2017.0627\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would like to know<\/a> how this occurs, because it may offer insights into some of the mechanisms behind dementia, as well as possible strategies for delay and mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With interest in superagers growing,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1112882\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaynor says<\/a>, &#8220;our findings notably encourage the view that the superager phenotype will prove useful in the continued search for mechanisms conferring resilience to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-genetic-form-of-alzheimers-identified-in-people-with-common-risk-factor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">It&#8217;s well established<\/a> that the \u03b54 variant of the gene Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.apsb.2021.10.002\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>, a neurodegenerative condition with no known cure, characterized by a progressive loss of cognitive function, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-sad-case-of-the-youngest-person-ever-to-be-diagnosed-with-alzheimers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">usually in old age<\/a>. On the other hand, the gene variant APOE-\u03b52 is associated with a much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-rare-gene-variant-seems-to-protect-you-from-alzheimers-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lower risk of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Imaging studies have shown differences in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/superagers-with-incredible-memories-have-brains-like-25-year-olds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brain structure<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/superager-brains-defy-cognitive-decline-we-finally-know-their-secret\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resistance to the amyloid plaques<\/a> associated with Alzheimer&#8217;s between SuperAgers and the rest of the population. Gaynor, her co-lead author, statistical genetic analyst Alaina Durant of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and their colleagues wanted to study what role, if any, genetics plays in superager status.<\/p>\n<p>Their research was based on an analysis of data collected from 18,080 people across eight large aging studies conducted in the US. These studies included tests of cognitive performance across the memory, executive function, language, and visuospatial domains, as well as genetic data collected from the participants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study defined superagers as those aged 80 and older whose cognitive performance exceeded the average score of cognitively normal participants aged 50\u201364. In total, the participants included 1,623 superagers, 8,829 people with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, and 7,628 cognitively normal controls.<\/p>\n<p>Among non-Hispanic White people, who made up the majority of study participants, the results indicated that superagers were 68 percent less likely to carry APOE-\u03b54 than participants with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.
