{"id":242038,"date":"2026-01-16T22:46:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T22:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/242038\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T22:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T22:46:07","slug":"10-new-homes-built-for-healthcare-workers-to-restore-port-hardy-er-hours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/242038\/","title":{"rendered":"10 new homes built for healthcare workers to restore Port Hardy ER hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ten new Port Hardy homes are move-in ready, built for healthcare workers to help bring back 24-hour emergency services in the North Island community. <\/p>\n<p>Announced on Thursday, Columbia Court is an Indigenous-led housing initiative developed and delivered by the Gwa\u2019sala-\u2018Nakwaxda\u2019xw Nations\u2019 economic development arm K\u2019awat\u2019si Economic Development Corporation (KEDC) and built by the K\u2019awat\u2019si Construction Company (KCC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are stepping forward to help address real challenges facing our neighbours and our region. This is what Indigenous-led development can achieve through partnership,\u201d says Chief Leslie Walkus elected Chief of the Gwa\u2019sala-\u2018Nakwaxda\u2019xw Nations.<\/p>\n<p>The nation partnered with the District of Port Hardy and Island Health to complete the project, and with Island Health acquiring the residential units for staff accommodation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 10 homes were built as a means to strengthen healthcare staff recruitment efforts by reducing housing barriers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHousing has become a real barrier. We see that everywhere across Canada and especially in B.C., and in particular in rural communities,\u201d Cyrus Singh, CEO of told CHEK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a bit of a shift in infrastructure now that healthcare is infrastructure now and businesses are starting to recognize that, the public sector as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rural community has struggled to keep the emergency room open 24\/7 with staffing shortages.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/cheknews.ca\/i-need-help-last-remaining-er-dr-in-port-hardy-pleads-for-help-after-two-more-doctors-resign-1135909\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Last remaining ER doctor in Port Hardy pleads for help after colleagues resign<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Currently the ER is open from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.islandhealth.ca\/our-locations\/hospitals-health-centre-locations\/port-hardy-hospital\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8 a.m. to 5 p.m<\/a>. In the fall, the community held a rally to get the hospital ER back to 24\/7 hours.<\/p>\n<p>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/cheknews.ca\/port-hardy-rallies-to-re-open-hospital-er-24-7-1292094\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Port Hardy rallies to re-open hospital ER 24\/7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccess to appropriate housing is essential to ensuring we can attract and retain the health care professionals our communities depend on,\u201d said Kim Kerrone, chief financial officer and vice-president of support services at Island Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColumbia Court represents an important step in strengthening the health care workforce in the North Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Singh adds \u201cThis project was developed by the nation, financed by the nation and developed with a specific need in mind in partnership with Island Health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The development is located at 7300 Columbia Street in Port Hardy, what Singh says is \u201cliterally a stone\u2019s throw away from the hospital, a five-minute walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one has moved in to date, but the nation hopes that now that it\u2019s built, they will come.
