Summer McIntosh<\/a> and L\u00e9on Marchand<\/a> were back in action at the 2026 Pro Swim Series Austin on Friday (16 January), as the swimmers<\/a> coached by Bob Bowman continued to shine at the season opener held in their de facto training pool.<\/p>\n

McIntosh showed no signs of fatigue or weakness in the women\u2019s 400m individual medley, storming away from the field to win the race in a time of 4:28.13. She was followed to the wall by Team USA\u2019s\u00a0Emma Weyant<\/a>, who finished the race nearly 12 seconds later in a time of 4:40.11.<\/p>\n

The dominant swim came one night after the Canadian star\u00a0won the women\u2019s 200m individual medley<\/a> in remarkably similar fashion, confirming her place as one of the best medley swimmers heading into the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just have an extra boost of confidence knowing I\u2019ve started to master this race when it comes to splits and things like that,\u201d she\u00a0told SwimSwam<\/a>, noting the impact of her coach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBob is the best, especially when it comes to an event like the 400 IM. We\u2019ve done lots of practices that are a thousand times harder than a 400 IM race.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fellow Bowman prot\u00e9g\u00e9\u00a0Marchand oozed with a similar amount of confidence and showmanship as well, scoring a commanding victory in the men\u2019s 400m individual medley.<\/p>\n

The four-time Olympic champion led the race from start to finish, touching the wall in a time of 4:13.21 \u2013 more than five seconds ahead of the next fastest swimmer. Team USA\u2019s\u00a0Bobby Finke<\/a> claimed runner-up honours, clocking 4:18.35 to beat Wilson York (4:22.20).<\/p>\n

It was a rough night for\u00a0Finke, who\u2019d already played second fiddle to Ireland\u2019s Daniel Wiffen<\/a> in men\u2019s 800m freestyle. While Finke remained within striking distance for most of the race, he simply couldn’t find the speed needed to overtake Wiffen, who finished in a time of 7:50.37.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Team USA\u2019s\u00a0Claire Weinstein<\/a> produced a time of 1:56.62 to win the women\u2019s 200m freestyle, while Van Mathias (26.89) edged out Kyrgyzstan’s Denis Petrashov<\/a> (27.12) in the men\u2019s 50m backstroke.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rising star\u00a0Ryan Erisman gave the home crowd a reason to celebrate by winning the men\u2019s 200m freestyle in a time of 1:46.66, while Skyler Smith authored a thrilling upset in the women\u2019s 50m breaststroke with a time of 30.43 seconds.<\/p>\n
