Timothy Busfield<\/a> filed key documents for his defense after being formally charged in a child sex abuse case<\/a>, hitting back at the State of New Mexico\u2019s motion to hold him for pretrial detention and sharing a list of potential witnesses that included his wife, Melissa Gilbert.<\/p>\n

In documents obtained by TheWrap and filed by Busfield\u2019s legal team Friday, the actor submitted 13 names that may serve as \u201cpotential witnesses\u201d for his defense ahead of his pretrial detention hearing on\u00a0January 20.<\/p>\n

Among the list of names was Busfield\u2019s wife, an actress best known for playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on NBC\u2019s \u201cLittle House on the Prairie.\u201d Until recently, Gilbert was notably silent following her husband\u2019s arrest on child sex abuse charges, noting via a rep that she would not be making \u201cpublic statements at this time.\u201d However, the rep did state on Tuesday \u2014 after Busfield turned himself over to the authorities \u2014 that \u201c[Gilbert] stands with and supports her husband and will address the public at an appropriate time.\u201d She has since written a character letter on Busfield\u2019s behalf (more on that later on).<\/p>\n

In addition to Gilbert, Busfield\u2019s legal team named a number of \u201cThe Cleaning Lady\u201d cast and crew \u2014 including hairstylist Kristin Karr, cinematographer Alan Caudillo, actress Debra Toner, hairstylist Danielle Vigil \u2014 as the Fox series was allegedly where the misconduct took place.<\/p>\n

As we previously reported, Busfield was charged with\u00a0two counts of criminal sexual contact<\/a>\u00a0of a minor and an open count of child abuse, stemming from an investigation into his relationship with child actors he directed on Fox\u2019s \u201cThe Cleaning Lady.\u201d He directed six episodes of the series from 2022 to 2025 and executive produced 14 episodes.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0an additional allegation surfaced<\/a>\u00a0against Busfield this week, he vehemently denied the accusations in a video shared before turning himself over to the authorities in New Mexico on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to confront these lies,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cThey are horrible. They are all lies, and I did not do anything to those little boys.\u201d<\/p>\n

Busfield further denied the allegations in his Friday filing, claiming the accusers lacked credibility and that they had financial motives for accusing him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State\u2019s case rests almost entirely on the accounts of two stage parents \u2026 whose children were recast from \u2018The Cleaning Lady\u2019 in 2024,\u201d Busfield\u2019s filing reads. \u201cThese witnesses are not neutral observers. Their allegations emerged only after the loss of the twins\u2019 role\u2014and only after consultation with civil counsel\u2014creating an obvious financial and retaliatory motive. That motive must be evaluated against the couple\u2019s well-documented history of fraud and dishonesty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Busfield also provided results from a polygraph test, in which he was found to be \u201ctruthful\u201d after denying inappropriately touching an alleged victim. Additionally, he submitted 75 letters from colleagues, friends and family members, all attesting to his character and professionalism.<\/p>\n

Gilbert was among those who submitted a letter, writing \u201cI will never be able to express the depth of gratitude I have to God for bringing this wonderful human into our lives.\u201d <\/p>\n

She added, \u201cMy husband, like my father, is former military, and that training only enhanced for him what he values most; honor, integrity, compassion and care for his fellow human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she went on, she told the judge that this was \u201cthe strangest letter\u201d she\u2019s ever had to write. \u201cI am trying to tow a line between logic and all the feelings swirling through me,\u201d Gilbert noted. \u201cI began this letter with logic, but now the feelings have taken over. I can\u2019t help it. I only want this extraordinary man safe and whole.\u201d<\/p>\n
