{"id":243724,"date":"2026-01-17T21:41:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T21:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/243724\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T21:41:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T21:41:13","slug":"tim-renwick-on-eric-clapton-david-bowie-and-al-stewart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/243724\/","title":{"rendered":"Tim Renwick on Eric Clapton, David Bowie and Al Stewart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"d4ae62d5-3a8c-469a-8b3d-ba263d7faf38\">\u201cI came very close to becoming one of David Bowie\u2019s Spiders From Mars,\u201d English journeyman guitarist Tim Renwick reveals to Guitar Player. \u201cAfter playing on his Space Oddity album in 1969, I was in line to join him on his Man Who Sold the World album, but it didn\u2019t work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Bowie hired <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/mick-ronson-the-rise-and-fall-of-glam-rocks-greatest-guitarist\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/mick-ronson-the-rise-and-fall-of-glam-rocks-greatest-guitarist\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mick Ronson<\/a>, who had been in a rock band from Hull called the Rats. Together, they would record six albums that brought Bowie fame as glam-rock\u2019s defining artist.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"d4ae62d5-3a8c-469a-8b3d-ba263d7faf38-2\">\u201cI think the fact that David got together with Mick suited him better,\u201d Renwick says. \u201cThey were very much a unit and good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Renwick \u2014 who recently told us about <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/tim-renwick-on-pink-floyd-s-syd-barrett-david-gilmour-and-roger-waters\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/tim-renwick-on-pink-floyd-s-syd-barrett-david-gilmour-and-roger-waters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his experiences with Pink Floyd<\/a> \u2014 became a prominent session guitarist, playing with artists like Elton John, Mike Oldfield, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/alan-parsons-pink-floyd-the-dark-side-of-the-moon\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/alan-parsons-pink-floyd-the-dark-side-of-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Parsons<\/a> and many others, including Al Stewart and Eric Clapton, whom he discusses here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.28%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uvFUsBzpDuwj9Xb7tP6oGK.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of guitarist Tim Renwick\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uvFUsBzpDuwj9Xb7tP6oGK.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uvFUsBzpDuwj9Xb7tP6oGK.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Tim Renwick (Image credit: Pooch Purtill (Courtesy of Tim Renwick))<a id=\"elk-e2f07444-2d8a-4695-9a2b-5a751c54afba\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>David Bowie<\/p>\n<p id=\"921d36fb-94c0-4ba2-97e4-1b191d88d91f\">\u201cWe made Space Oddity at Trident Studios in London. David was very easy to work with, but rather nervous in the studio. At that point, I was in a band called Junior\u2019s Eyes, and the main guitar player and leader of the band was Mick Wayne, who had been called up to do the guitar work on the \u2018<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iYYRH4apXDo\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iYYRH4apXDo\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Space Oddity<\/a>\u2019 track.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a period of not performing, David was planning to try out some live shows and see what it was like to actually tread the boards again. He asked Mick whether Junior\u2019s Eyes could back him on a tour of Scotland, and he agreed. They only really knew him as a pop singer, but there was a lot more to him obviously than people realized at the time. We did several other things together too, including recordings for the BBC and a show on London\u2019s South Bank, where he was incredibly nervous. Al was a very nice chap, very easy going and was interested in all kinds of stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used to have this rather unfortunate habit of losing his voice on the road. And when he was losing his voice, he\u2019d hit a note and he would just turn into a kind of high squeak, which was actually quite amusing. But obviously we didn\u2019t tell him that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt resulted in us having like three or four days off till he got his voice back, so it made it quite a pleasant tour of America. Al was very open to me and what I wanted to do, so he allowed me quite a lot of leeway with things like that solo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spent a bit of time on it and put together the section where the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-acoustic-guitars\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-acoustic-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acoustic guitar<\/a> solo switched to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-electric-guitars\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-electric-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electric guitar<\/a> solo, and then the sax played the final bit. It was about building an intensity. On the original album cut, the guitar solo was much longer than the single. I used Al\u2018s Guild acoustic for the lead and rhythm part then when it switched to the electric I used my old faithful \u201962 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-stratocasters-fender-strats-for-every-budget\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-stratocasters-fender-strats-for-every-budget\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fender Strat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAl moved to Los Angeles after Year of the Cat. I did Time Passages with him in 1978 but then I felt it was time to move on. He wanted me to move to America to permanently join his band, which I sort of considered but never really fancied. But I did do another album with him in 1988, Last Days of the Century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-fe52a4c8-6053-4297-b04a-c17cda20e4c2\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Eric Clapton<\/p>\n<p id=\"d7b06263-0234-454a-b25b-53578e1e874e\">\u201cEric and I played guitar together on Roger Waters\u2019 Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking tour in 1984. We got along quite well, and Eric hired me for the tour for his 1985 album, Behind the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened was, Eric started the tour with J. Peter Robinson on keyboards instead of having a second guitarist, but they didn\u2019t get on. Peter was a great player, but a bit too jazzy for Eric. So I got called in on that and did about two thirds of the world tour with Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur rehearsals basically consisted of just running one number twice, as Eric wouldn\u2019t play a number more than twice. And if you asked him any questions about the technical side of things, he would shrug and say, \u2018Well just play what you feel like playing, mate.\u2019 He said, \u2018I wouldn\u2019t have hired you if I wanted you to play what I wanted,\u2019 which was great. He was still drinking a bit, and that was sort of taking its toll. Obviously, you\u2019d notice if Eric had a few drinks, as the next day he\u2019d be looking grey around the gills. And the thing was, on those occasions, he played better than he did when he was sober.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was very determined to prove a point that he could still do it, although that album is probably not the best example. But he was a very strong character, and a great player.
