Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> announced a new trade agreement between China and Canada on Friday.<\/p>\n

The deal will allow Chinese Electric Vehicles into the country in exchange for a drop in tariffs<\/a> for Canadian agricultural products<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In response to the new deal, political analyst Ken Coates<\/a> told Global News he believes the tariff conflict should have never occurred in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a conflict that shouldn\u2019t have happened,\u201d Coates said. \u201cChina should never impose the tariffs on canola the way it has done. That\u2019s not a good neighbour approach; it\u2019s not a good partner sort of approach. We\u2019ve got a decade of being told that China is a very risky partner. And now all of a sudden, we\u2019re climbing into bed with China. So, these are difficult, complicated times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, Coates is worried about the response Canada will receive from the United States<\/a>,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen people come back and tell (U.S. President Donald Trump) what this all represents \u2026 it\u2019ll be presented to him as Canada has chosen China over the United States. And Donald Trump is very much given to the idea that said, well, if you want to make that choice, then we\u2019ll make it for you. And I think it puts the Canada-U.S. trade agreement sort of a little bit more at risk than it was before.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Coates said he believes the work between Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Carney demonstrates that the government is open to collaboration for the greater good of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cScott Moe stood up for Saskatchewan, Prime Minister Carney stood up for Saskatchewan, we got something back off the table, so it\u2019s not as bad as it was before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
