After eight weekends, Disney\u2019s \u201cZootopia 2<\/a>\u201d has set a new record for the highest grossing animated film from a Hollywood studio with $1.7 billion grossed at the global office, passing Pixar\u2019s \u201cInside Out 2\u201d to take second place on the all-time animation charts before inflation behind the Chinese hit \u201cNe Zha 2.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an intra-studio upset, \u201cZootopia 2\u201d will also finish as Hollywood\u2019s highest grossing film of 2025, beating fellow Disney release \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash,\u201d which might slip below the leggy animated film on the charts next weekend. On MLK weekend, \u201cFire and Ash\u201d is projected to earn a 4-day fifth weekend total of around $17 million, while \u201cZootopia 2\u201d has made $12 million in its eighth weekend. <\/p>\n

On the domestic side, \u201cZootopia 2\u201d has passed $400 million and should hit $423 million with more strong holds over the next 2-3 weeks. In doing so, it will pass \u201cA Minecraft Movie\u201d and the \u201cLilo & Stitch\u201d remake to take the top domestic spot among 2025 releases. <\/p>\n

Before inflation adjustment, Disney has released the top three highest grossing Hollywood animated films of all time, and top four if you count the CGI remake of \u201cThe Lion King\u201d ($1.66 billion) as an animated film. Among that bunch is \u201cFrozen II,\u201d which made $1.45 billion, while the highest grossing non-Disney Hollywood animated film is Illumination\u2019s \u201cThe Super Mario Bros. Movie\u201d with $1.36 billion.<\/p>\n

What is interesting about this sequel\u2019s run is that domestically, \u201cZootopia 2\u201d is still set to make about $200 million less than \u201cInside Out 2,\u201d which made just under $653 million<\/a> in summer 2024. But that was made up for by the Disney sequel\u2019s historic run in China<\/a>, where it is on the threshold of passing \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d as the country\u2019s highest grossing American film with $619 million. <\/p>\n

But that popularity has also expanded to other major Asian markets, particularly Japan, where the movie stands among the top 5 highest grossing 2025 releases for the year alongside the likes of \u201cDemon Slayer: Infinity Castle\u201d and \u201cKokuho\u201d as it is on pace to gross $100 million there with $83 million and counting. By comparison, \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d has grossed just $13 million and counting in Japan, less than half of the $32.9 million of its 2022 predecessor, \u201cThe Way of Water.\u201d <\/p>\n

With this run, \u201cZootopia 2\u201d now stands among the top 10 highest grossing films of all time before inflation adjustment, sitting in the No. 9 slot behind \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d with $1.92 billion. <\/p>\n
