Ben Affleck and Matt Damon<\/a> shared their thoughts on cancel culture and Hollywood\u2019s reaction while promoting their new action movie, The Rip.<\/p>\n

The duo, who are longtime friends and collaborators, appeared on the Friday, January 16 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience<\/a> podcast, where the host brought up the topic of cancel culture. Damon, 55, was the first to agree with Rogan\u2019s thoughts that cancel culture is a negative thing, alleging that some people who have been canceled would have much rather been incarcerated instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cI bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever, and then come out and say, \u2018I paid my debt. Like, we\u2019re done. Like, can we be done?\u2019 The thing about that getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends. And it will just follow you to the grave,\u201d the Martian star<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n

Affleck, 53, then likened the situation to a \u201ckind of sixth-grade instinct\u201d where kids would point and \u201cooh\u201d at someone who was in trouble.<\/p>\n

\u201cHumans have dark, f**ked up instincts too sometimes to isolate people<\/a> or get joy out of someone else\u2019s\u2026 they\u2019re in trouble, maybe because part of it is saying, \u2018Hey, it\u2019s not me.\u2019 So if you can point the finger, everyone\u2019s looking over there, we feel safer, you know?\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Argo director also explained that he feels taking forgiveness out of the equation makes it impossible for someone to learn from their mistakes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think anybody wants to think the sum total of who you are is your worst moment,\u201d he concluded, clarifying that he doesn\u2019t mean to absolve \u201cpeople that are, over and over again, doing horrible s**t and don\u2019t care\u2026. But you remove the ability to forgive people.\u201d<\/p>\n
