Here\u2019s what to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmnzkoi005k26qf8uiqd2db@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Syrian forces are hunting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/isis-fast-facts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ISIS<\/a> fugitives after dozens escaped from a prison in northeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/middleeast\/syria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syria<\/a>, the interior ministry said, as the government moves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/18\/middleeast\/syria-military-takeover-kurdish-sdf-explainer-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to take territory<\/a> from Kurdish fighters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t00033b6pu7q7jre2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of the 120 who escaped, 81 have been captured, the ministry said Tuesday, adding that \u201cintensive security efforts continue to track down the rest.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t00043b6prt0kzi2f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a former US ally in the fight against ISIS, accused the US-led coalition of failing to come to its aid after it was pushed out of much of the territory it controlled in the country.  On Tuesday, the SDF announced its withdrawal from a vast detention camp holding tens of thousands of ISIS-linked civilians, citing \u201cinternational indifference.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t00053b6pxahw7lve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Syrian state media said US President Donald Trump spoke earlier with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to endorse Syria\u2019s territorial integrity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t00063b6p9rpphuzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what we know about the prison break and the ongoing fighting in Syria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t00083b6pmzxhoxxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Detainees escaped from al-Shaddadi Prison on Monday as government forces wrested control of the area from the SDF, which had been the US\u2019 main local partner in the fight against ISIS that began in 2015. The SDF and the government accused each other of releasing the prisoners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t00093b6pt70o3xrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami told Kurdish news site Rudaw that around 1,500 ISIS members had escaped, \u201cincluding both foreign and Syrian nationals,\u201d accusing government-linked armed groups of releasing them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t000a3b6py1dxu0fo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN cannot independently verify the number of detainees that were inside the prison, nor how many escaped. The SDF said Monday that al-Shaddadi prison held \u201cthousands\u201d of ISIS detainees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t000b3b6p53rbrhod@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Tuesday, it accused government forces of besieging al-Aqtaan Prison, north of Raqqa, which holds ISIS detainees, and cutting off water supplies, holding the government responsible for \u201cany humanitarian or security repercussions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t000c3b6p8x5c0ywr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Later, the SDF said it withdrew from Al-Hol camp, which holds tens of thousands of ISIS-linked families, due to \u201cinternational indifference\u201d to ISIS and \u201cthe failure of the international community to assume its responsibilities in addressing this serious matter.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t000d3b6p9k0cstjx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Syria\u2019s ministry of defense said the SDF abandoned Al-Hol, \u201ceffectively allowing those held inside to leave,\u201d and that it was ready to take over the camp as well as ISIS prisons. In a separate statement, the government said it had informed the US about the situation and accused the SDF of attempting to \u201cexport a new security crisis in the area.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t000e3b6patsphfd3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The defense ministry pledged that its forces will not enter Kurdish villages as it takes Kurdish-held territory in Syria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8t000f3b6plxzp9zh3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said last year that Al-Hol, along with Al-Roj camp, houses over 40,000 displaced people, many of whom have ties to ISIS.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/gettyimages-2256558322.jpg\" alt=\"Clashes between the Syrian army and YPG, operating under the name SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) in Syria's Raqqa province on Monday.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1216\" width=\"1825\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000h3b6pnz2jdiy4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Kurdish SDF feels abandoned by the US as Washington strengthens ties with the al-Sharaa government, which has pledged to reassert central control over all of Syria and opposes regional autonomy for religious or ethnic minorities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000i3b6pmnieh361@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the weekend, the Syrian military, aided by tribal militias, drove Kurdish forces out of large swaths of northeastern Syria that the SDF had controlled for more than a decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000j3b6pl51k7gv3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the territorial gains, al-Sharaa said Sunday that an agreement had been reached with the SDF to end the fighting. Despite the ceasefire, both sides reported further clashes on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000k3b6pg81k6qny@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The SDF had been Washington\u2019s partner in Syria, but the US drawdown from the country in 2019 left the Kurdish group backed into a corner, particularly after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime late last year and al-Sharaa\u2019s rise to power. The US-led coalition fighting ISIS in Syria had long relied on the SDF to guard ISIS prisons.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000l3b6ppdagf1vu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Monday, the SDF accused the coalition of failing to intervene to halt the advance of government-allied forces, despite what it said were \u201crepeated calls\u201d to its base roughly two kilometers (1.2 miles) away.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000m3b6phvt3ddg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Syrian state news agency SANA reported that al-Sharaa held a phone call with Trump on Monday, where both parties stressed \u201cthe importance of preserving Syria\u2019s territorial unity and independence.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000n3b6phsmi8iuz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two leaders also discussed Kurdish rights and combating ISIS, according to SANA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000p3b6p2d50d6w2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ISIS emerged from the remnants of al Qaeda in Iraq. At the height of its power, it controlled about a third of Syria, with Raqqa as its capital. In 2017, the SDF declared the \u201ctotal liberation\u201d of Raqqa, working with US-led coalition forces to reclaim territory from ISIS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkmrdv8u000q3b6p89iiwga2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rights groups have criticized humanitarian conditions inside prisons holding suspected ISIS members, captured by the SDF.
